Getting pee'd off with this disc burning lark now. Bought some CD-Rs. Tried burning a boot disc 4x, all failed.

Went out, different shop, different discs. Tried again. Same error.

I need to burn the boot disk before I can even find out what I can do at the next stage to get the broken PC up and running again.

    Pants.

I've never had to burn CDs before..

Do Pcs have an "About this pc " menu option/icon? You could find the model of CD burner and check which format it uses. I used to have one that only did -Rs but not +Rs.

Got one of the "burns RWs and Rs" etc. models now, but I used to burn dead discs fairly often with my older drive. Can you turn a USB drive or ipod into a startup disk?

Send some up here please, my car was last washed 8 days ago, and is currently filthy (it's been to Milan and Luxembourg since then)

Why don't you just fly instead of driving everywhere. I like driving sometimes, like the road to Skye, for instance, but slogging back and forth everywhere on motorways must get pretty old pretty quickly and surely it's just a massive waste of time as well?

Whilst I agree, I can also see the different colours appearing on the tree.

All this and I still don't have a single red tomato!

Fatboy Slim ain't as good as the old days, But I hope he's good for you!

I recently bought tickets to see David Baddiels Fame (Not the musical) at the RSC (keeps the jewish theme going...).
Also bought tickets to see Portico Quartet in the same month, which should be good.

I'm off to see phuq buttons (not the correct spelling...) sunday

Thanks for the tip about Public Service Broadcasting

Got a good link here for a free download from a band calle Bodywork which sounded marvelous as I was driving home tonight.

    Oh no.....

My mother once said to me...'I hate those women who plant ornamental cabbages'. I planted five to day in pots by the door and by a window and have two left over for another pot. I never liked them much either, but I feel funny.

I've been working outside yesterday and today. Lots and lots to do, or I'd be on holiday for the new year. When I say working outside, I don't mean gardening. I mean doing office work in the garden.

Working outside is lots of fun. I rigged up a ten year old PC, as I don't like laptops and didn't want to disturb my main desktop.

I dropped an ethernet cable out of an upstairs window, and away I went - all on 128MB of RAM. It really zips along with office 97, an old version of win XP, and the 2006 antivirus disabled. :) I've just found an old stick of 512MB of RAM, so maybe I'll be able to install an up to date AV, XP SP3, ie all the usual bloatware.

The main drawback is the 15" TFT. It's a really great quality screen, fine for word processing even in the glare, but hopeless for the large spreadsheets I do.

Any suggestions for a tiny footprint AV, please?

PN, I saw your posts about problems with a non-booting PC. I didn't wade in, because I thought you might be more concerned about your mum. If you are having all these issues burning CDs, can you make a bootable USB stick instead?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

My wifi is best of all in my front garden, Fastest on the whole property (fewest walls I guess). Its wonderful in the nice weather. :)

I tried very hard to convince DH to come home today, but he is just too damn well behaved.

He'd rather be here when we have the house to ourselves anyway.

No idea. Didn't know there were different formats.
I did try a "test run" option on ImgBurn and it said it was successful. Itl just blows on every burn.

    No USB drive, no ipod.

I am trying to burn a startup disc so I can shove it inside a PC here that's broken. Never tried to do any such thing before, never needed/wanted to.

We once bought a cheap laptop from an online supplier . It had no backup disc. You had to burn your own. Guess what it never managed to do?

You might as well borrow an external disk drive and burn it that way. At least that might work.

At least with macs there's startup disks you can find online that can do it. When I switched to OSX ages ago I had the last mac that took floppy disks and I made a repair disk that could start the computer, run Disk Aid and run a CD ROM driver so you could try other repair CDs if necessary. it was amazingly useful to be able to do that but now...:(
