    I won't ask again.

PN is there a beside light you could bring in to the room you are in then take it back when you are finished?

    Thank you :)

Good point about a light that plugs into a wall socket - guess they are usually on different circuits?

Being a new house, this has got those stupid building regs special new bulbs - which you can't find to replace them when they blow.... so even the hall light doesn't work as that bulb blew over a year back and the house owner just never bothered to even try to get a replacement for it. Same in the downstairs loo, which is also one of those new fangled ones. Else I'd have the hall light on with the door open.

It has occurred to me that I sounded rather rude saying that. I didn't mean to be.
I'm incredibly grateful for all of the support and gentle pushing given to me (some less gentle than others ;)), and for all the kind wishes since August finished!
Without wishing to single anyone out, I lost count of the number of times last week that I reminded myself that out of everything on MSE, GBD looked for an update from me first :o

I knew it already (and you know it too), but you guys are such incredibly nice Nice People.

If it's any consolation, you've reminded me to pack the head torch that I treated myself to a couple of months ago :)

Hope you find some light soon :(

    Have a wonderful week off!

Its meant to be good weather too.

I did perhaps fail to pace myself a little today. Still feel comparatively good, just tired. :D

Thanks lir. I'm looking forward to some time away from it all, some fresh air, and topping up my vitamin D. The forecast is for rain from Friday though, which has put a stop to any crazy notion of not taking my wellies.

Dunno. Submission deadline is end of the month, this was sending a 'final draft' to supervisor.

Got a nice email back :) but not sure whether the end of the month deadline has been remembered (I have reminded...).

I'll be a little disappointed if it's a 'no', but I feel like I've 'made peace' with it, so anything else would be a bonus. And to be honest the thought of a viva is horrifying.

I'll let you all know as and when, so would prefer if you don't ask (i.e. if you don't hear anything it's a no!) :)

The viva is a scary prospect, I know. But they won't eat you. If your supervisor is remotely competent then you will not be allowed to submit unless the thesis is good enough to pass. The viva then consists of the examiners being conscientious enough to feel they have done their job properly, but basically being on your side rather than your enemies. They like passing people! If your supervisor lets you submit, then it is almost certain that your examiners will pass you with minor corrections - that's what happens to almost everybody.

I have only ever known one PhD student not pass a viva, and that was blatently the supervisor's fault. In the case I know of, one of the examiners wanted to pass him, and the other one didn't - on the grounds that it wasn't a suitable project for doing a PhD on, which is hardly the student's fault. The supervisor should either have helped him to choose a more suitable project, or else should have helped him to choose more suitable examiners. This is unbelievably rare and will not happen to you.

Having said all that, I should admit that I was so scared of my viva that I felt nauseous all morning and unable to eat anything for breakfast or lunch (viva at 2pm), and then when it was all over, I found that the after-effects of half a day of massive amounts adrenaline and not eating had messed up my digestion such that I could barely eat any of the celebratory meal that LNE and I went out for. I was too happy to mind that, though. :)
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)
