Weathers dry but the grounds soaking after yesterday's downpour. Just taken dog for his short walk to do his business. Long walks out of the question until the op is over and healed.

He's on painkillers and seems feisty when we meet other dogs.

I wonder if his pain's been keeping him placid.

I was staggered when I found out Australians get a day off for the Queen's Birthday.

We could have Bonfire Night off to celebrate.... and keep the Govt on their toes, lest they forget.

We get Queen Victoria's birthday off! They're a bit slow down here. I keep meaning to say she died in 1901 and, after messing about with a few Kings, got another Queen in place.

I think the UK should have more public holidays. Some possibles:

    - 5th November (bit anti-Catholic for C21st?)
    - D-Day/VE Day/Churchill's Birthday
    - My birthday
    - St George's Day
    - Anniversary of duffing up assorted Celts
    - Maggie's birthday (mostly to upset the Socialists which seems reason enough)
    - Anniversary of 1966 World Cup win
    - anniversary of Edgebaston 1981 Ashes win
    - Trafalgar Day

Cold. Its ruddy autumn. That silly weather man is still saying what a nice weekend it is. Very odd.

It was 16 degrees when I went out at 11.15. Not really a Summer temp and def not the 23 degs that was expected at noon. As my husband says "I don't know why we bother watching the weather, it's always wrong".

As it was raining here this morning, peeing down not drizzle I went back to bed for a little sleep.

OH woke me at 1pm, the sun was shining and he had creosoted my shed (it is my shed - other members of the household fill the stables and gagrage with carp). It is the creosote replacement for those who know about toxic stuff.

I came downstairs and was chatting to OH when he moaned that he wished he had left me asleep...he is watching the Grand Prix. I explained that waking me up was code for "I miss you wife, come and talk to me", He said "it was code for it is time for lunch".

We had lovely weather yesterday. Today it is raining.

here, it's just rained yesterday and today. But we took Isaac to a lecture at the Science Museum today, which he loved, so it's not been all bad.

I covered several years of these New Years' Day courts by choice, which were always really civilised because the police didn't want to lock too many people up. Suited me down to the ground as I was away over Christmas and didn't drink much on NYEve.

I've chosen to do NYD several times, too - it's quick, and I don't see the point of NYE much.

I've been there! I had a phone call from my GP: "Your blood cell test shows an abnormality...." I looked it up, and apparently this particular abnormality is a sure sign of leukemia. The GP arranged for me to see the consultant double-quick, and of course it was nothing. I was grateful that the GP was being cautious and vigilant, and I've learnt to take my self-diagnoses with a pinch of salt.

Hoping for an equally positive result for you (or negative result, this language thing is so complicated!) :)

OH had similar about rheumatoid arthritis, told by someone at Moorfields that he had a 95% of developing it from a blood test. He refused to do anything else about it, until I dragged him to a specialist. Turned out that 95% of people who develop RA have this thing in their blood, which is a completely different kettle of fish from 95% of people who have the thing getting RA. He didn't.

England could do with some winter comfort festivals. America starts with Thanskgiving and carries on till First Night.

Scotland starts with St Andrews Day (bank holiday)-30th Nov goes on with Christmas (since the late 50s) then Hogmanay(not a holiday but a booze-up)/Ne'erday (two bank holidays, unless you actually work in a bank)
then Burns Night 25th January (not a holiday, but a booze-up).

I don't know why England doesn't make more of a fuss over St George's day. The day has a big literary connection being connected with the birth/death days of Shakespeare and Cervantes. I love books and Catalonia and it's the day when half the book sales in Catalonia happen.

Edit: obviously CK Gen and SC will know more about how they celebrate holidays in Georgia, Oz and Wales.
