Unless you have a medical condition you do not NEED to run three times a week, you might want to but that is different to needing to.

Man, it really annoys me when people pull others up on this....you just don't understand how English works, do you?

"Need", on it's own, isn't even a thing. Nobody "just needs" to do anything.

You NEED to do X if you WANT to achieve Y.

You NEED to breathe if you WANT to keep living.
You NEED to turn up to work if you WANT to keep your job.
You NEED to put a letter in the post box if you WANT it delivered.
You NEED to put bullets in your gun if you WANT to shoot someone with it.

Personally, I'm training for a marathon at the moment and I NEED to run 3 times a week to achieve this....the training is a NEED, a physiological fact, required to achieve my WANT...if I WANT to make the distance, I NEED to train.

As to whether anyone ever NEEDS to do anything, that's for them to decide - not you...so don't try to be a pedant about it.

Yes I agree you do NEED to train three times a week because you WANT to run the marathon. However you do not NEED to run the marathon, you WANT to. You do NEED to breathe , you do NEED to eat but you do not NEED to run a marathon. I am not knocking you for wanting to do it, I admire you for that, but I would not class it as a NEED.

    Taken from wikipedia

"A need is something that is necessary for organisms to live a healthy life. Needs are distinguished from wants because a deficiency would cause a clear negative outcome, such as dysfunction or death. Needs can be objective and physical, such as food, or they can be subjective and psychological, such as the need for self-esteem. On a social level, needs are sometimes controversial. Understanding needs and wants is an issue in the fields of politics, social science, and philosophy".

Hence I asked the question if the OP had a medical condition (which would include self-esteem issues) why they need to run

Yes, I have medical condition that need i run at least every two days!

In that case maybe try speaking to your doctor, they won't be able to directly help with the retailer but they may be able to write a letter which you could show the retailer and send off a copy to the head office explaining how you have been treated, and that you have a genuine need for this to be dealt with urgently, this might help.

No, I don't NEED to eat. I don't NEED to breathe. Like I said, there's no such thing. I want to run a marathon, sure...So I need to train.

I want to have energy, continue to live and thrive, so I need to eat.

It's the same thing. Needs help you get wants. Nobody *needs* to do anything, not a thing. It's all choice.

I think you're confusing "need to" with "have to"...You *have* to do things over which you have no choice - breathing being an example...You don't *need* to breathe...you *have* to - ie I could try and not breathe, but I wouldn't be able to, eventually.

You *need* to go to the bathroom if you don't want your trousers ruined...After that you *have to* go to the bathroom. (notice there's no consequence here, it's just "have to") then, of course, you just go :)

Like I said, I want to run a marathon, so I NEED to train. You can't say I don't NEED to train to run a marathon, I do, it's a fact....

You can, however, say I don't *NEED* to run a marathon - but that's not what you said to the OP, was it? You just said she didn't need to run. Like I said, it's for her to decide whether it's something she needs to do to achieve her "wants" - not you.

If you quoted the whole sentence, instead of the first half, you could answer your own question.

The shoes are a civil matter, the retailer being aggressive toward the OP may well be a criminal matter.

    Are you having a laugh?

If that was the case the OP would have been straight to the police station or calling the police not here posting about it.

However it's being handled, aggressive behaviour is criminal, not civil. OP explained why she was going to go to the police and you chose to ignore that. Are you having a laugh?

Let me repeat if the OP had felt threatened then she would have called the police at the time.

Op just another thought what brand are the trainers? Is it a big name? Have you tried contacting them and explaining the trouble you are having with the retailer and you need it resolved quickly due to medical issues enclosing a doctors letter would help here. I bet that might help get it resolved.

That doesn't change the fact that the OP advised they were going to the police because of the threatening behaviour. Whether it is true or not is an not the point.
