Tell me more about the partition screen. As far as I know, you should be able to install windows in the existing partition without formatting, so your files should be safe.

Can anyone correct me on this?

If you are worried about that, we can use some of the tools on the Boot CD to retrieve any work that you may wish to save.

Maybe its me but remember I had only 2-3 hrs sleep last night.

When the blue screen comes up it says use the UP and DOWN ARROWS to select an item from the list. There are two items in the list, my C: drive which is named 'partition1' and another option called 'unpartitioned space'.

I got 3 options, ENTER to install, D to Delete:confused: and F3 to quit.

If I click Enter on my partitioned space it would mean windows will setup on this area. Wont that mean all previous data would be lost?

Sorry for being such a daft its the sleep and last minute work thats been getting me all funny.

    Thanks for your help,

Can I install Windows XP on the unpartitioned space? That would mean two windows xp on one computer? is that possible? Dont know what the implications are or even if this can be done. Can anyone shed some light on this? Was thinking of doing this tonight so can get on with my work tomorrow.

So do you ever get to a screen where you are asked if you want to install Windows....?

Pressing enter will then try to do the install, it will find the existing install and as if you want to install new or repair the existing install. you want to repair.

The problem I beleive you said the PC has windows xp home installed this will totally screw the install up and put xp pro on from the pro cd you will need a cd key for windows xp pro and it will require activation again.

That is a possible reason that your not getting the command console repair option. Which I know will work the automatic windows repair Im not sure I dont think it checks the drive for errors.

Otherwise, you can try pressing 'R' repeatedly whilst the files appear to be loading(before you get to the partition screen).

That's not the case for the XP Pro CD I supplied to him. It's a custom version I use for evaluation purposes. It doesn't need a CD key, nor activation.

If that doesn't work, I may have a common or garden version somewhere.

Im pretty sure I've got XP Home, it should say on the screen when I start the computer? Let me just double check.

Donnie - the CD you gave me is XP Pro right? Does that mean I cant use it to repair my Windows Home?

Hang on....If I click to install Windows on the partitioned space and if it then gives me an option of repairing then that shouldnt be a problem as I am not actually installing the software onto my computer, I am just using it to repair my existing software? Or am I just really confused?
