Magazine 'thread' competitions

comping_cat wrote: »Imagine you are going into the magazine thread for the first time.
You go into the first page and you are bombarded with links.
You scroll through the pages - the first so many are full of expired competitions, so many different magazines.
You see a prize you like, but it is listed with a load of others that you are not interested in.
And then, on top of all that, you can enter every day and when you come out of it there are hundreds more competitions on the main board - which are not bundled together.
Is anyone really saying, that this is a fair way of posting?
I am old enough, ugly enough and have been here long enough to work out my own system of entering competitions - a lot of other people are the same.
However there are far more people who are new, not organised, dont have much time etc who want to come and enter competitions as simply and easily as possible.
Even as a sticky, all the threads that are bundled together (including the puzzler and TAB ones, the only reason im not complaining about them, is because someone actually pays money before they post for the benefit of everyone else, but why they are together when other paid for magazines are on the main board i will never know) are not a good way for the majority of compers to either enter or think of entering.
I remember very well coming here as a newbie & posting the puzzler.com/Take a Break monthlys on the main board & getting a lot of pm's from 'older' peeps & a BG telling me off
& that they 'belonged' on the puzzer/tab monthly threads :D it confused me but I had to learn as didn't get much help from many in them days
but now, the threads are easier to find/posted on dailies thread & lots of peeps help when a question's asked about them now we have the compers chat cornerplease be a responsible pet owner & spay/neuter your pets, too many strays & not enough homes for them sadly.0 -
If I remember correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong) the main reason the magazine dailies ended up on one thread was because of the effort and time it took posting them the old way. I believe one of the regular posters decided they could no longer spend so much time posting and no one came forward to offer to take the slack. There is still only a handful of people posting the magazine comps as there was before, and I can't see this changing if we went back to the old way.
I don't see how it took any longer posting them the 'old' way? There is still a title, link and answer in each post on the 'new' thread. That's all that was ever needed when posting the comp before?2008: £783.12 - 2009: £6,401.15 - 2010: £4,230.61 - 2011: £8720 - 2012: £2,041.89

Ive only ever voted on polls ive been interested in, i dont bother with anything im not, and at a guess (and knowing how many thousands of people who come onto this board compared to how many vote in a poll) i dont think we would be catching the people that count.
Ok that's fair enough, though I do think it is a fair option which could be tried out.
If it was floated on the main comp board everyone who lands on the main comp board then can have a chance to vote, this will include the new people who may not know about the thread at all yet but will then.
So it is kind of killing two birds with one stone new people will eb aware it's there, plus able to vote on this system or old system
I'm trying to find a compramise all round because it's a lot of work for the posters to put everything back to the old way if it's not going to benefit people new or old

Does anyone else think it's seriously ironic that we're all debating this when Cornishpasty is having problems posting. If she can read this, she may be going menthol wanting to add something.
Cornish, if you're reading this and can't comment, then pm me or one of us and we will post it for you.

If it would keep the peace I would go back to the old way, it will take a little longer for me to fill them out but hay it's not that important in my life
If it's fairer so more people can see it then I would forgo my time for more people to enter them.
But it was done differently because of the few lovely people who stay up at 12.01 on the day's they know it will be posted to post them. I feel for these people.
I do think nothing should be decided until Cornishpasty can have her/his say as she/he is the one who sits up at 12.01 & waits to start posting them
As I am only someone who enters them & not give any effort to post them I believe it should b their choice
I made a good surgestion to float a poll on the main comp board where every single person who comps will see it, I think then new & old people will answerThis Post Has Been Sponsored ByChocolate0 -

if peeps don't mind me saying, the problem & i think tinkerbell/ & any of the others who were posting them including myself,
hopefully will agree, the old way, we posted on the main board first, then had to add it to dailies, so double posting which takes up quite a bit of time, then, the same comp is/was appearing in some of the other mags so again it was double posting,
another one is sometimes late at night or early in the morning another member would post a new one on main board but don't/didn't add to dailies, cp/myself & others would then copy the posting to add to dailies,
then glad had to update the main pages on the dailies whenever she could so it's like -
one posts on main, then again on dailies, glad has to check the threads & repost in dailies updates,
this new way whenever a new comp appears the finder/member can just add it to the thread on the end therefore it's only one posting for the op instead of having to manage to double post with them, then all cp has to do is paste/copy the new one onto the relevant listings,
just my humbles xplease be a responsible pet owner & spay/neuter your pets, too many strays & not enough homes for them sadly.0 -

It took longer because each comp had to have a new post started with appropriate end date/title etc, then had to have the question and answer typed out, and then have a link sent across to dailies. Do this for each mag for each competition and that's a lot of time.
Now it is purely a 1 line entry including the answer added to the end of Cornishpasty's thread.StayHome * StaySafe * BeKind0 -

Thanks for that - i never liked/use the dailies anyway so would get rid of that too if it was all up to me lolI still think posting a comp is a choice though. Anyway, as i said earlier I've found what works for me and wasn't even saying that we should go back to the 'old' way just that I personally I don't like the new thread.

Apart from the adding to dailies but I don't see the difference? They all still have the end date in each post, the title in each post, the answer in each post and the link in each post? That's all that was ever needed before, just the adding to the dailies page which is different. I'm obviously missing something...2008: £783.12 - 2009: £6,401.15 - 2010: £4,230.61 - 2011: £8720 - 2012: £2,041.89

It only really became a problem I think when the amount of competitions per mag increased, sometimes there can be 10 new comps a day per mag (Tuesdays normally). The "normal" way of starting a new post, typing out the E: and the title, then copying the link across and typing out the answer etc just became too time consuming especially as it is so repetitive with most mags sharing the comps now.
It really is a lot quicker now with just adding a 1 line entry to the thread with most of it being a copy and pasted link.StayHome * StaySafe * BeKind0
