Well as an example check out the Hykeham Roundabout on the A46, near Lincoln. And again on the Skellingthorpe Roundabout, just a few miles away.

Use street view, and you will see two of these on the approach to both roundabouts.

If you note I said inappropriate "by itself". In both your examples, there is other signage indicating the layout of the roundabouts.

However, I maintain that not every roundabout is adequately signed for unfamiliar drivers to show which lane you should be in to correspond with which exit.
    PLEASE NOTE
My advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.

Yes I agree. But I was just showing an example of signs on the approach to the roundabouts which show that two lanes go into one.

I can't argue with that, as I haven't studied every roundabout in the country.

Just following the highway code should keep you safe (in theory).

Well neither have I but as I've been a coach driver off and on for over 30 years, i've encountered quite a few.

As with very type of road junction, there are well marked/signed ones and there are bad ones. Ideally (IMHO) all should be signed/marked assuming all drivers have never negotiated the area before.

I agree. But unless many people report each roundabout, it is very unlikely to happen.

It's like parts of London, where there are very few road signs. I was once within a mile of Brent Cross shopping centre, but there were no road signs at all for it.

Are the entrances marked as two lanes or just wide and treated as two?.

Marked as two. The roundabout is also marked as two.

I think the problem stems from the fact that the roundabout itself was previously unmarked (though the lanes were always marked) and most folk treated it as three lanes.
I agree (unless either lane has a direction arrow). However the OP was in lane 1.

The OP was quite correct to be in lane 1, assuming their description is accurate.

Definitely wasn't one of those roundabouts where you need to be in the right lane to go straight on?

No, because straight ahead is the first exit;)

If you are going straight on, and there are no direction arrows, it is correct to use any lane as you approach the roundabout. I seem to remember from my driving lessons to use the "most appropriate" lane, which could well be the one with the shortest queue.

On a busy road I would agree with this, but at the time of the incident we were the only cars on that stretch of road, and the other driver had presumably been in the outside lane for some time, thus ignoring the - "always use the inside lane unless you are overtaking" rule.
On that stretch of road - which is 2.4 miles long - many people stay in the outside lane for the whole duration if they are using the last exit at the roundabout - which again is wrong.

I'll only do that, if I'm travelling faster than the cars in left lane.

Can't be many round-a-bouts that have 2 lanes on the approach and only one on the exit(s) with no directional arrows. Depending on the geographical layout of exits, lane 1 would normally be for leaving at the first exit and lane 2 for straight ahead and turning right.

This roundabout has no immediate left exit - straight ahead is the first exit, which continues for another mile as dual carriageway. So there are no directional signs, but there are clear lane markings on the dual carriageway and the roundabout.

Which would be perfectly OK as you are overtaking them, or if the road is clear, then you are aware of your speed and any traffic which is approaching from behind you.
