Mid 1972 £8000 New terrace, they were £5350 at start of year and reached £11000 at end of year and would have been well out of my price range.

1992, aged 23, 11% deposit on £40,000 terraced house. No idea how much it's worth now.
    Possibly more pertinent:
    £40,000 house, 1.5 x joint income; £36,000 mortgage, 1.33 x joint income.

We bought our 1st house in 1958 for £1,825.00, they wanted £1,850.00, and we got them to knock £25.00 off which we thought was marvellous. My husband was earning £9.00 a week.

That was 3.89 times your husbands income. If I bought for 3.89 times my income my house would be £97,000!! Our deposit alone was more than that! Just shows how crazy prices are now!
