Did you take a sabbatical from life in 2008/9?

Maybe because I live near London!:p My friend bought her flat in Blackheath for about £50K around 2000 and I can't imagine them ever falling to that type of price again.

At 25. It was around £25,000 and at the time, getting a mortgage was cheaper than renting. (I'd been paying more to rent a room in a similar shared house in the same area)

  • We just bought our house last September at £155,000. I am 24 and my partner is 26. I was in a fortunate position with the deposit as won a settlement against a terrible driver therefore gave us 10% deposit.

It's do-able. Just save save save!

I was 27 and bought a 1 bed flat in west London for £200k, late 2011.

Worked well for me and recently sold it for a nice profit, and have just bought a 3 bed house with the fianc! in a beautiful part of London.
  • I turn 38 next week and my wife is 38 in January.

We are in the process of buying our first place for £179,000 with a £36,000 deposit (80% LTV). Between us we earn over 60K but it's been a long road getting all the ducks in a row!

We bought our 3-bed semi in 1998 for £87.5k and a 100% graduate mortgage! I wonder if they will ever be available again. Can't believe we didn't need a deposit at all when you look at the financial state of things now. Actually we also had to take out some sort of indemnity insurance that was a few thousand too and the bank added that onto the mortgage so the mortgage was actually more than 100%.
