    Bought with my wife in 2005 when I was 32/her 27 a 4bed semi for £208k (South).
  • I put off buying until I had a deposit saved and knew my income would be stable for the short to medium term covered by a fixed rate deal. It's advice I would give to anyone at any stage of their lives.

If you are one of the 27 people in the S Wales valleys who has a job, it should be easy

if you live in London or the SE, forget it

(Oh and 24 BTW, and that as in the era when prices weren't silly)

Why? What's wrong with London or SE?

Very high interest rates but very low house prices. As opposed to now very high house prices very low interest rates. I'd prefer the former!

RevolvingDoor: indeed. To those who say the price of housing has risen proportionally with people's incomes, I say read this forum topic!

It depends where you start from but if you start from 1993 when they were the lowest they have ever been they have.

Bought first place in 1990 - one bedroom house for £36995. After the crash we sold it for £34000 and bought a 3 bed semi for £35k in 1996! Tough at the time, but the crash helped us long term...

We bought our 1st house in 1958 for £1,825.00, they wanted £1,850.00, and we got them to knock £25.00 off which we thought was marvellous. My husband was earning £9.00 a week.
