I've only looked in because of the suggestion to move the new thread over to Health and Beauty - which is, I stress, a suggestion!

Yes, we have a fair few dieting threads, but it is a very diverse board: questions about dentists, opticians, hairdressers, bra fittings do outnumber diets. We even have a running thread ...

Also you can follow a thread without visiting the board it's on: use the Thread Tools to subscribe and get an instant, daily or weekly email if the thread is updated, or just click on User CP and get a list of threads you've posted on, showing any that have changed since you last 'saw' them. Many of you will know that, I'm just mentioning it for those who want to avoid the main Health and Beauty board but are obviously good people to have around.

and don't worry, if you move, I shall be keeping my nose out!

Have to say, I post (as you prolly know) on the MSE Exercise thread in that board and really there's very little on there about dieting, not a huge amount moreso than on here...there's a little bit of atkins this, etc, but that would be *so lost* amongst the amount of gumph we post daily.

Also, perhaps our thread could stand strong in stark contrast amongst the fads and short term solutions? (although, thinking about it, isn't the c25k thread over there anyway, do they need another running thread?)

To be clear Rich/Becky - are you saying you're out if the thread switches boards, or if dieters invade?

At the end of the day, the forums are a free resource, although not free to provide obviously.

If things have to be shuffled around so that the most 'urgent' and/or 'important' posts dont get swamped then that is entirely at the discretion of the provider of the forums - its not really up for argument.

I didn't really have much of a view on whether moving to the Health forum would have any effect or not, but it would.

Running is a competitive sport, which can mean competing against others, competing against yourself or competing against the clock. As such it may not actually have a place anywhere on the forum, but 'Health & Beauty' just seems a completely different subject. Its not somewhere I'd even looked at until yesterday, but it does seem to attract pretty much .... dieters!

Runners are long term addicts of running, dieters are long term addicts of food and weight obsessing - chalk and cheese.

It does seem inevitable that if you put a thread in the middle of a certain audience then that audience will predominate.

Cant we just start a new thread and leave it where it is? I'm not sure there is really a problem with 'swamping' anyway. I look at new posts chronologically starting from when I was last on, so if the last 9 posts were to do with clubs and such like as per the observation then these would be the last posts that I would come to. And everyone is used to skimming internet lists to find content relevant to their interests. What may be perceived as 'swamping' is probably just interesting variety.

for me, it is not about whether it is surrounded by dieters or whatever, but simply that I am "at home" on DFW - it is where I spend my time. I know perhaps I should visit the other areas of the boards more often, but I don't. I am here for my Debt primarily so naturally post on my diary on DFW and subsequently post on others' - including newbies. So to have the running thread there for me to post on too is just perfect.

If it goes to another board, I just won't visit - not as protest, or anything like that, but just because I don't venture outside DFW.......

Like the "diaries" debate, I feel that if you keep the running thread here, you will keep those DFW bods who post on it here too - and that means they are MORE likely to help newbies than not. If you are encouraging me to move to another board, we are LESS likely to see the other threads requiring comment and help.

It is about getting the balance right, and I think (as someone who has been here a good length of time) that the balance is right. If it ain't broke, don't fix it......

Happy running everyone - blisters still stopping me today, but might venture out tomorrow......

    Another good point, Hypno.

There has to be something to keep the 'regulars', who are probably the most likely to be able to offer advice and help, in the vicinity in order that they will actually see the new posts requesting guidance.

Its like having a coffee shop in the middle of a shopping centre. If a dictat said that all coffee shops should be moved out to their own coffee community nobody would visit anymore. The other retailers would suffer too because people would spend less time shopping if they couldn't have their coffee break mid-shopping spree.

On the other hand, too many coffee shops in the shopping centre would adversely effect the space available for retailers and would have an adverse effect.

You're right Hypno - its about getting the balance right and it would seem that it is just about right as it is.

    (I hope the analogy wasn't too irrelevant:p )

Wow, 100+ mph winds spreading across certain parts of the country at the moment. Hopefully things will have calmed down for tomorrow morning's race!

Talking of weather, its refreshing to see that Haile Gebresallassie is actually human and gets affected by weather conditions like the rest of us. In Dubai yesterday he ran the fastest first half of a marathon ever in 1:01:25, but due to a torrential downpour in the second half he only managed a miserable(:p !) final time of 2:05:29 - which still managed to be the eight fastest marathon of all time! The man is a legend!:D

    Ooo a democracy - I like that!:D :D:D

I think everyone understands the issues now and you cant have these type of threads multiplying ad infinitum, but Hypno has hit the nail on the head with the point about having the regulars 'hanging about' whether on the chat thread or here or wherever so that help is always close to hand.

If you look at newbie threads there seems to be, more often than not, surprise at the speed and quality of help received - which would indicate the positive effect of having threads like this one far outweighs any sort of swamping effect.

From opinions so far, it would appear that the only strong opinions are for leaving it as is (or at least starting a new thread in the same place).

To be honest, I do like the way the board is. I love the inclusiveness of it. But urgent threads can sometimes get a bit lost.

This is just my personal opinion and nothing to do with being a Board Guide etc... I have no say over these things.

But perhaps a sub-board to deal with urgent problems with creditors/DCAs/whatever is an idea, leaving the main DFW board free for normal Debt Free business?

As said, just my opinion. Not my call.

  • Thats probably a sensible way forward - finding a way to highlight the urgent stuff as oppose to trying to strip out everything that is non-urgent/routine.

This problem has been brought up before, and the MSE team do listen. :)

See this post by Martin: Serious Nagging From DWFs

That was discussion putting diaries and threads like this one in a sub-forum. Didn't happen, and in my personal opinion for the best.

But this is our/your board after all. It may be a privately owned site, but if no-one posts that means nothing.

This is the wrong place to discuss this really. Sorry.:o
