    Hi everyone :hello: (including newbies)

Just thought I'd pop in for a few mins as I'm off to Jamaica tomorrow for the marathon/recovery/holiday :j :j .

Only two sessions this week. Both with the running club: speed on Tuesday and hills yesterday. Speedwork was good only because I had a runchum so we encouraged each other :T . Yesterday's hills were painful although I'm not sure if it's because I forgot my inhaler or because it was the first time I'd done it 7 times . Anyway, I'd been looking to do a 4 mile lunchtime run today and the dead cold I'd been fighting since yesterday morning won't leave me alone and the max strength cold and flu tablets don't work evening though I'd started popping them as soon as I detected the first sniffle yesterday .

At least I can call it a rest day, although this morning I did think of cycling to work in lieu of a run (exercising is addictive, isn't it?):D

Anyway, tonight I'll be packing and making calls. Need to clean the flat so I don't come home to a mess too :o

I wish everyone a lovely holiday season with no injuries and only minor sniffles. I'll try to do a marathon report whilst I'm there but I might need a few days to recover from it AND the beers I've promised myself as a post-run treat  .

    See you in the '09:A

Hi All (and welcome to lordwardrobe)

Just got back from an easy 7 and for the first time in my life, I can say that and mean it...went in a group, so not very fast, got round in 1:09 and wasn't out of breath, was steaming a little, but not pouring sweat...Didn't take my pulse, but it wouldn't have been high at all. Have to say, it felt great. Had a nice chat, looked at the scenery, all very pleasant, didn't have to push myself once.

Probably not great from a fitness perspective, but great fun nonetheless. This running's really starting to pay off, methinks :D

Well done the easy 7 idio! Glad you enjoyed it - sometimes it takes running with others to realise how far you've come...:D
  • Poor - Best of luck, but you're very well prepared so probably won't need it. Don't skimp on the Red Stripes in Negril afterwards!:D

Idio - As as already been said it takes runs like that where you back off a bit to realise just how fit you are. In terms of the value of the session, 7 miles is 7 miles and most benefits are unrelated to speed - so its all good miles in the bank.

And yes, I can confirm that Becky is the raving loony of the thread.:p

Oh I meant to ask you Rich - what's Base training - heard it being bandied about somewhere by some other runners and didnt want to look like an idiot next time someone brings it up...(I can look like an idiot in so many other ways ;D)

We always call it LSD! (not that we're into taking dodgy substances you understand!:p)

LSD = Long, Slow, Distance. ie Just get the miles in the bank regardless of speed and build up the strength. Unless you've got a good grounding of LSD you can't handle the rigours of quality work in the training plan.

It used to be thought that you should spend a few weeks doing nothing but LSD, then a few weeks doing tempo work, then a few weeks doing speed work. Therefore, the first stage was known as Base Training.

However, it is now seen as a recipe for creating injuries because of the sudden increase in speed towards the end of the training program.

It is now seen as far more effective to be working on all areas, and at varying speeds, simultaneously. The key is to keep them in the right proprtions as the training progresses.
