I'd like to be a member, I have been running for quite a while by myself although hubbie runs as well so it would be nice to have some company. I did my local Race for Life 2 weeks ago and am currently training for Jane Tomlinson's Run for All which is in Leeds on 24th June. It's a 10km and will be my longest race. My next goal after that is the Swindon half-marathon in October.

My best advice comes from my hubbie, he says there's no distance you 'can't do' so build it up slowly. Have small goals and build them up and even when you're out running and feeling pooped, say right I'll run to the next lamppost, tree, pub!!!! Then run to the next one. It's all about perseverance and once you've been out a few times it gets better.

    Hi there

You are doing really well considering you have only been going 8 weeks. Don't be too hard on yourself.

I find it hard to stick to a routine with running because I have young kids who don't always go to bed when told.

You will probably find on the day of the race you will run a lot quicker. My average 10km was an hour but when I actually did it, I did it in just under 56 mins. Saying that though, don't run too fast with the crowds - you'll make yourself ill

Six weeks is a lot of time to get your training in and I was told by a friend who is a professional(ish) runner instead of adding distance to your runs, add time on to it - say run an extra 5 mins - each week.

    Good luck and keep posting

    Can I join?

I'm a total running newbie, I've never fanced it before, all that pounding pavements and shock to the knees... But suddenly I see people running - or hear you lot talking about marathons  - and feel ashamed.

I'm fairly fit, I walk and cycle loads, so running shouldn't be too hard.... should it?

So my goal - and it's REALLY wimpy compared with all the rest of you - is to be able to run a whole mile without breaking into a walk.

I love Pania's idea of running before breakfast. I could easily do that, it's my best time of day. I'm going to hunt for a pair of shorts before I go to bed and do my first run tomorrow.

    Any tips welcome.

Good for you seaxwyn and of course you can join in!! glad the suggestion was helpful, and running a mile is as big a challenge as a long run to those not used to it. So thats your goal, now go find those shorts and good luck for the morning!!

How about we all have morning jog? I will have to go about 6am  as I need to leave at 7.30 for work. My dog who is my usual running companion is on her hols so it will just be me and my ipod for 30 mins - what do you say?

Hi blackangel, I'm setting my alarm for 6.15 (half hour earlier than usual), so I'll think of you speeding effortlessly along on your beautifully waxed legs.

Is that like Interval Training aint it! That's good actually for CV. I'm just gonna burn mi fat and it will take 9 weeks!

Yep. I used to do the accounts of a personal trainer and instead of paying me he personally trained me, or should I say he put me through hell twice a week. I used to feel physically sick as I went out the door, but the good news was I lost loads of weight.

I never once just jogged on a tread mill - maybe it was my mind set - cos i just could not jog for thirty solid mins.

I adore the rower though and that really does burn fat. Do you have a rower on the sub?

I'll lay down a personal challenge - how much weight do you want to lose before Blackpool??

Loads of tips. The most basic being - if you can still talk you aren't working hard enough....

I used to moan constantly. on and on and on and he used to say - it can't be that bad - you are still talking!!!
