Hiya Spud, there's no such thing as too fat to run hun (well, maybe in America :D). Give it a go, you might surprise yourself. Or just stay and post anyway, cos we love ya! Oh and well done to anyone who has run today, Maz, squizz, sally...apologies if I've missed anyone, it's hard to read it all on such a tiny screen. By the way, if anyone can tell me how to do paragraphs, as I don't have a return key, I would be most appreciative!!

    I loves you too ;)

I might give it a go......would need to get out of the PJs first and put some ...erm....support garments on :D

  • Heeeeeellllllllo! Just a mega quick update as have to carry on with the cleaning of the house...boo hiss...but I did a 7 miler today and managed to run it in 67 mins, so ran at 9 min 38 second minute miles! :j FAB to know that with the distance slowly increasing, I can still keep up the speed! Gonna up it by a mile a week on the Sunday to get up to 10 miles before starting to alternate the distance as Richoneday advised! Sooooo happy but my goodness did it take me a lot of determination to get out of my cozy warm bed this morning! Gonna get this a lot now I reckon! Lol!!!

Anyhoooos, hope everyone is well! xxx

Oh, I can do walking, but am probably too fat for any running  :D

    Spud,

Another new name - welcome along!

Stick to walking is my advice until you feel as though you're itching to go for a little run - yes, it will happen eventually!

The reasons why walking is better for you when starting out are manyfold (is that a word/s?:p) :

    1. Muscles/tendon/ligaments all get strengthened without the damaging effect of running on the joints and muscles.

    2. Every walk increases the power/weight ratio by increasing muscle mass and decreasing stored fat. Therefore, you are preparing your body to better cope with the eventual demands of running.

    3. More fat is burned per mile by walking than running.

    4. It is much easier to just set off for a walk without any real preparation, therefore more time available for actual exercise.

I would say that until you can walk 5/6 miles several times per week there is little point in starting running. The overall progress towards a running goal(whether its to run a 5K or whatever) will be quicker by taking the walking route first!

You're starting to feel strong now so the increase in distances should come relatively comfortably in the next few weeks.

Isn't it nice when you can feel that progress start to build in your body - almost like a bit of a miracle happening right under your nose.

And yes, the hardest part of any run is usually getting the first step over and done with! :p

Just be a bit careful in letting the distance runs creep in to becoming time trials every week - in effect this empties the available resources instead of building the engine capacity so they should always be run relatively comfortably even though you know you can run quicker.

Hi guys - thanks for all your support.

did the 10k cancer research run at sandringham this morning. did it in 1hr and 30min exactly. am really impressed with myself - not bad for a 15st lump even if i do say so myself! lol

it was a beautiful morning, overcast and cool. the grounds at sandringham are spectacular to run in - although her maj was not there to cheer us all on!

am now thinking about my next run - i think I will do 10k again as I am just getting into this running lark - also I really felt as though I struggled from 7k onwards so would like to improve that. am thinking about January time so if anyone has any ideas - let me know!!

    thanks again

    jenny

Well done Jennyred!! i am inspired by you no end!

    Congratulations Jenny,

You must have enjoyed it, and caught the bug, if you're already thinking of the next race.

It also sounds like a great course to run on which always helps the enjoyment of the run.

    Well done.
