So training for a half with tapering for the 10K is the way to go. Which is the 10K on 23/11?

What training have you got in mind? The majority should be steady runs in the range 120-140 like the distance runs but with speedwork in the form of a mixture of fartlek/4x1mile intervals/1mile hill reps.

When you're not used to speedwork these type of sessions should probably limited to 2 per week at the most (or 1 if you're not recovering quick enough).

    Yep 10k on the 23/11!

Was planning on running 3 times a week Tuesday/Thursday and a Sunday. Nice longer run on the Sunday, intervals on the Tuesday by doing a mile warm up, 2 miles intervals, a mile cool down and a normal run on a Thursday, about 5 miles. None of my runs are ever flat so a few hills to conquer on the way. The longer runs I was to get them up again to about 10 miles until I pick a half to work towards!

Maybe, depending on how I feel, my start doing some hill sprints on a Friday too. During the week I run during my lunch break so nowt longer than 5 miles really!

Spud, don't worry if you can't fit those sorts of sessions in, I wouldn't have a chance of managing that either. I want a new hobby and a better level of fitness, not an Olympic gold medal! :D  :p

    Thanks Snaggs.

I'm lucky that I dont have a desk job, so can incorporate some walking into my day (and get paid while doing it ;) )

Would time on an elliptical trainer count? I could do that while the dinner is cooking

I would think it would contribute to your aerobic fitness, and would start to work on some of the muscles that you will use for running, but I dunno - Rich or one of our other running gurus will be able to tell you though, if they're around.

Snags are you ok, is it your neck that is playing up again??
Spud, just take it one step at a time, as I said to snags and Jinky Back in April I couldn't run a mile and 2 weeks ago I did a half marathon (yes it was a struggle but I got around...just!)
Donna, you are fab and your speed is getting quicker and quicker..amazing!
Maz, you keep going and I think in about 2 weeks you will find yourself suddenly running over that 4 miles...you will suprise yourself!
Becky, I too am looking forward to my Rich training plan starting tomorrow...with a days rest :) although will have to cycle 2 miles to work!
Jenny well done on your 10k thats a great time and something for you to work from!

Hope I haven't forgotten anyone..Oh Rich great support and advice as ever :T

Ok now I've said my hello's I have to tell you the funniest thing that happened today (no it wasn't a Paula poo insident :) )
DD has been pestering to come running with me for weeks now and I really want to encourage her enthusiasm. So today I agreed to buy her some trainers so she could come running with me (she is 3 by the way). Back from the shops all geared up and ready to go around the block. Got to the end of the road and she starts wailing...no no I want to go to the big place. I couldn't understand what the hell she was going on about..especially as she was having a major tantrum in the street by this point. Finally back at home I managed to work it out that when she said she wanted to go to the big place...she meant Bristol (as in the half marathon). So I have agreed to take her to the Honiton fun run (also a 12k...must not be tempted) so we can run together! Lets get her hooked into running too :rotfl:

Hiya Sally! Yes, the muscle just below the base of my neck keeps going into spasm, and it can be really painful, I can hardly move it sometimes. I thought it was okay today, but when I got home I was having lots of twinges. I'm okay after a big dose of ibuprofen, but that makes my asthma worse, gahh!

    Thanks Sally.

It's inspiring to hear that fitness levels can improve so quickly, although I would imagine I'm starting at a much lower level than you did :o
