I wonder if a fast walk, or "jiggly walk" (copyright 2008 Maz) is maybe enough to keep everything warmed up sufficiently to start off again? Like Rich says, it's all theory and there are conflicting opinions. I've heard a theory from a Swiss sports physio that it is better to start running from cold (even on 100m ) to reduce the risk of hamstring injury. That goes against everything I've heard before! Personally, I think easing into something just makes more sense!

And as for my rest days, they are generally spent slobbing on the couch.

You mean recuperative restoration in a horizontal plane? :p

Yes, while replenishing my carbohydrate, sodium and blood-sugar levels.

Out of interest, what does anyone do (if anything) as there cross training / rest day? I know you swim like a dolphin Maz... just wondering if anything anyone else does?

I guess this shows me up as "not a proper runner", but tbh I don't consider days when I do anything else "rest days" - on "rest days" I sit on the bed, eat some food and play some video games :)

On my non-running days, I try and swim a little, I do a fair bit of mountain biking (although I've not been out for 3 weeks, been so busy at weekends) and I play the odd round of golf (although it's been months now..). I'm also supposed to be learning to snowboard at some point, but have only had one lesson thusfar...lazy me...

Well I do play football as well as my running, but I try not to let them conflict and don't really count the footie days as "rest" days.

    1. I'll ignore your first question on the basis that you're just showing off! :p

    2. Diet wise you need to make sure you get some basic building blocks in there such as regular roughage/carbohydrates/proteins, but the more you study the subject the more confused you will become. And advice changes quite rapidly anyway. My staple diet involves a lot of muesli with loads of fruit in. It works for me as an 'energy food' and then I eat what my apetite asks for on the basis the apetite must be linked to what the body needs.

    3. As for alcohol - I hate to have to say this but my fastest marathon was run when I had pretty much no alcohol in the build up. But then again, I ran my fastest 10 miles whilst drinking like a fish. So, keep it down is the most apt advice (that's the amount of alcohol not advice about not throwing up :p)

Tee hee! Social gal strikes again...:p

Okay well I eat museli or porridge for brekkie anyway so thats good, and I love fruit (I'm addicted to raisins at the moment, but its all good). I tend to eat pasta or rice with something like tomato sauce and fish for dinner and usually a salad for lunch...but I also will happily munch a chocolate bar or a cake without thinking about it, so its good to know I shouldn't be counting calories or anything!

I try not to get too hung up on food generally as we have a few eating disorders in the family and I do not want to end up there!

Alcohol - yeah I suspected it might be an idea to cut down...I gave up a few years ago so its not like I need it to have a good time since I'm nuts anyway :rotfl:. I'll see how this weekend goes and have a think about that one.

    Thanks coachie

Oh yes, its the raisins for me too! How strange is that? I thought it was just me being a wee bit unusual! :p

It looks like your diet is just fine - your body takes what it wants and throws away the rest so its not as though you have to try and perfect anything.

And 'coachie'? A wee bit disrespectful don't you think? ;)

I had to look up what 'barfed' meant - it must be a Scottish thing. Ah well, that's my one thing learnt for today!:p
