just re-read your thread. have you had it looked at? does the knee still feel "wobbly" If so i'd say maybe a torn/snapped medial or cruciate ligament, esp with the shooting pains. if you torn the nerves also they grow back believe it or not at a very slow rate of 1mm per month approx, therefore 18months would be about right for them to start knitting back together and causing pain.
It sounds as though you hyper extended (bent it too far forwards)the knee which can cause all sorts of problems, torn cartiledge, torn tendons.. I'd say seek medical advice as you don't want it to get worse. But do not bow out gracefully!!! easy to say i know but you can get through this with the proper treatment and training. Good luck!!

Thanks pania, you are right, I really do want to keep going.

I have not had the knee looked at, unfortunately I am one of those who do not want to make a fuss and foolishly believe that things might go away.
In fact, until I sat and typed these notes, I found it difficult to explain the problem. I am going to the doctors in the next week or so.

Your words have helped especially, recalling the event, the piece you type about hyper extending the joint, thank you

I injured my knee years ago and a very rude Dr told me I'd end up in a wheel chair by the time I was 40, because she said, I wouldn't have damaged my knee SO badly, if I hadn't been SO fat (cow) Well I am SO NOT in that there wheelchair and every birthday give a cheer of glee:j :T

Hello Herewegoagain, thanks for the kind words.

Part of what you explain is also my problem. I am a 6 foot 15 1/2 stone lump and I am sure my knees have taken a terrible pounding over the years. Unfortunately, due to my build I am never going to get under 14 1/2 stone .

I am doing what pania suggested and use the cross trainer regularly. This does not affect my knee badly.

Hello cnoelj, just had my 3.5 hours and now on my first cup of coffee ready to start another day.

    Uberalles,

    Welcome along!

I can't believe how much nocturnal activity there was last night (I'm talking about the thread before anyone asks! :p).

So, we know there's a relatively strong distance runner in there somewhere but theres a problem with the past injury. There is no way of telling whether the ligaments will be up to the job until we take it through a logical build up. But I'd say if you approach this in the right cautious way you should almost certainly be able to run a marathon.

Running puts 3 times your weight as a force through your knee every step which equates to something like 100 tonnes of force per mile. That is a lot of cumulative wear and tear if the necessary strength isn't present in the knee/hip/ankle support structures.

So to maximize your chances we have to increase the strength of ligaments/tendons before starting and then when you do run we need to take the damaging jarring force out of the equation, so creating more strength with limited training damage.

The ways to do this are straightforward although you may find it somewhat boring.
For the strengthening you need approx. 100 miles of walking which will become naturally faster and make you feel stronger as you go along. It is far too tempting to skip this stage but I am just coming out of this stage and I can assure you that your overall progress will be quicker if you don't skip it. By doing so you increase muscle strength and reduce weight so improve the power/weight ratio from 2 angles.

Secondly, and everyone on this thread knows what I am going to say word for word :p, you need to get some Sorbothane insoles which dissipate as much as 95% of that damaging force through your legs and knees.
    http://www.lb-sorbothane.com/

Just do things more slowly than you naturally feel like and let your body absorb the improvements. Too many people get injured by missing the right foundation work.

    But above all enjoy it.

PS The original injury does need a proper diagnosis and ideally by a sports physio. The chances are its not as bad as you fear, but it may need a bit of micro surgery to free something up. There is a nerve either rubbing or getting trapped somewhere. The pain you describe is similar to shin splints, but not exactly because I'm sure you'd have known what that was. But in itself a shooting nerve pain doesn't indicate any sort of inherent weakness just a need to put everything back in the right place in layman's terms.

What a find this is! I went out for my first jog in a year today and found i'm super unfit compared to how I was.

I'm so happy to find this thread as I need the motivation of the team effort.

    Hi Mizzbizz,

Love the name, I'm sure we can have some fun with that :p. But welcome along to the 'less than sane' thread that is the DFW Running Club.

'Super Unfit' is probably everyone's starting point so don't worry about that. You'll get plenty motivation from this lot whatever you want to get out of it.

Talking of which when you come back on just give us a quick idea of want you would like to achieve both in the near future and wild dream type ideas (if applicable). If it is to run a 5k or lose weight or whatever doesn't really matter as long as it is your goal.
