hey guys. I dont actually run, in fact ive always hated running! However! I have been dreaming a lot about taking up running (literal dreams not metaphorical ones). Now I have a park near by and i guess stuff i can use to run in the form of trackies, t-shirts and trainers... however, how they heck do i start? I dont expect to be able to just go out and run because im not exactly the fittest person (currently trying to lose 2st), although i do walk a fair bit and do Davina DVDs lol. So how should i start this out (gosh i feel daft saying that but i honestly dont think its a daft question lol)? Do i run, walk a bit, run, walk a bit? Jog? not a clue. How long should i be aiming to be out for to start with etc?
Thanks guys0 -

Talking of which Maz,
You mentioned having a personalised number plate. In the last week I've been passed several times while out and about by a lady in a red VW Beetle with a plate starting 'MAZ'.

Hi all! :hello:
I will admit I haven't read the entire threadbut I would like to join you all if there is room for a (not so) little one!! I've been 'running' for about 3 years now, since my lo was 1 in an attempt to shift the baby pounds.
Anyhow thought I would join you all to give me a little extra kick

Hi there!
The first bit of advice I'd give is to *run really slowly* to start - really, the slowest jog you can imagine, just to get you "off and running"...If your dreams are of you sprinting across meadows, wind rushing through your hair, you might be a little let down
So, running really slowly, try 500m...If you're feeling OK by the end of it, do another 500, if not walk for a while, then try running again.
For weight loss, it's important to try and keep your heart rate elevated for as long as possible, so your initial training strategy should be to get running for as long as you can (time wise), not as far as you can (distance).0 -

Hello and welcome to the land of endorphins and happy people! (christ that sounds like a group of hippies from the 60s).
First things first - what do you want to achieve? Forget losing 2 stone, thats no problem at all. So we need to set some target, say to run 5k or 10k next year some time, but it must be your choice.
Then we'll join the dots between now and then in a very nice relaxed way. You're already doing the right groundwork by mixing walking and running. The approach should be to take your walking distance and start by jogging as far into the route as feels comfortable and then walking the rest (not restarting). Then walk the route the next time. Then start by jogging again (you'll probably find you can go a bit further this time) and walking the rest.
Eventually you will be able to jog the whole route, say 3 miles for example. This is to get a fitness base together. Keep walking as much as you can to strengthen tendons and muscle connectors so you don't get injured later.
Then we can look at training for your target. Its all good fun and enjoyable.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Helloooo poodle!!

Where in the world roughly are you? how far do you run?
You have child(ren) so you immediately get my empathy! how do you fit it in!?
I assume you are a lady, cause i never met a man who ran to lose post-baby pounds, although i know a few who should!!!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -

Hellooooo emmylou...love the avvy pic! so cute!
If you can do the Davina DVD, then you are fit already, so take the advice as given out by the boys, and you'll be running your first 5k in no time!!
you might find you're a natural born runner, i am not, but it doesn't stop me!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
