Rich, Dear Rich I wasn't taking the P**s I was being serious. Your great at the training plan and I really have no idea other than pinching some off the internet!

Right I must get DD out of bed (think she must be tired to still be asleep at this time) Will try and pop on when I get back fromwork at 3 ish.

Oh and Max Iam guessing 23 lengths :)
I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....
    Finally Debt Free...
  • *nervously peeps head around the door* Hi!

I've just started running and I'm rubbish at it but feeling very motivated to get into it properly. I'm very unfit, overweight and haven't exercised properly for ages so starting at the bottom really :D I used to run as a kid, mainly cross country and I loved it. I used to run for the school and the local club, I wasn't brilliant at it but definitely 100 times better than I am now :o

Reading all this about marathons has made me think about doing one in 2010 as I will hit the big 4-0 in March that year and would like to do something [strike]silly [/strike] memorable. Is this a ridiculous plan or achievable in the timescale involved? Would I be able to follow a training plan off the internet/out of a magazine or would it be better to join a club?

The answer to your main question is - if you've got 2 legs and really want to do it then its perfectly achievable.(Edit: That's nonsense, the legs are optional as well, proven many times). It looks like there may be a few of us aiming for London 2010 with mainly first timers so you're in good(ish) company.

You're still a little bit young to be honest but, hey, you can't do anything about that. ;).

We are just putting plans together to form a AAA affiliated club so you will be able to become a club member right here in time.

So you have lots of time - the first stage would be to get some fitness before thinking about training (this is the stage I'm at at the moment after a long lay off - but I won't say you're in good company because that would be a blatant lie :p).

Let me know how much time you have available and what you're able to do right now - how far do you think you could run at a push? How far do you think you could walk at a push?

Stick with us and you won't be unfit, you wont be overweight and you'll LOVE IT!

Ooooh, that's a good marketing line!

Sally, I know - if I'd really thought you were having a go I'd have sent you some nasty horrible frowning smilies :p.

We'll get your London build up sorted out.

I did a bit of a Google on training plans last night and was a little horrified at what some of them contained, even at Runner's World. One of the beginner's programs was just asking for injuries because in every session it involved letting muscles tighten up and then suddenly re-stretching which is a recipe for disaster as beer tins was talking about yesterday.

Sessions should be as near to 'rolling' as possible with rests consisting of very slow jogs. So you do have to be a bit careful in picking up some of these off the shelf programs. You're better off taking a slow and steady approach to training rather than losing time to avoidable injuries.

  • Did you know that, all other things being equal (ceteris paribus for the greeks amongst us), your physical ability peaks TWICE per year?

If you schedule races as close to these 2 days as possible you will end up with better times. Bunkum? Well, I thought so until I did some back tracking and found that all my PBs except one were achieved within 5 days of these 2 'peaking points'.

Its all to do with Biorythms. There are 3 cycles - Congnitive, Sensitivity and Physical which work on different cycle lengths. When they all peak at the same time you can take on the world. But the Physical one alone works on a 6 month cycle.

So when are the peaks? Easy peasy - your birthday and 6 months later.

Have a look at Wiki and Google it - its been labelled as crackpot and pseudoscience, but all I can say is my data supports the idea - so there! :p

10 miles is the best of all distances. Don't ask me why, I just love the distance!

Just view it as an extended training session - you've always got to do a distance for the first time at some point. Just start more slowly than you normally do - you may have achey feet at the end but you'll get there.

  • morning again peeps........

20 lengths in half an hour, with moderate rests as required... felt great and for the first time ever i actually felt hot in a swimming pool...

    I am buzzing!!

Have got some healthy grapes, a fruit and seeds bar thing from the bakery section of somerfield and a smoothie as am expecting to feel ravenous in, oh about 6 minutes time.............

my hair is a right ole mess though.... no working hairdryers at the pool and it is peeing a rain here still... have straighteners in my bag, normal service will be resumed shortly in the coiffure department! - as if you care!

    FYI - i have done the maths... 25m x 20 = 500m = 0.5km!! Actually doesn't sound that impressive does it, but it's something to build on.....
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....

Morning swimming does feel good for some reason.

You now get more value out of your buzz cos you've got all day to wallow in it. And wallow I'm sure you will! :p

I'm so sorry to hear about your hair. Pwah!

It is interesting that grapes and fruit bars have accompanied you to work. This should be taken as evidence that people should not calorie count and worry about weight because your body tells you what food it wants to eat. The more you exercise the better the food without thinking about it.

I liked your summary earlier, especially the 'nonsense and banter' bit. You may as well have just stopped at that though!! ;)
