    Hiya Jenny,

Welcome along. Obviously there is very limited time to get any training done, but anything you do in the last 4 days will be counter productive (ie you will do your body damage from the training without leaving enough time for the repairs to take place "The Training Effect").

So, from where we are now I think all you can do really is do as much as you can in that other 5 available days knowing you're going to get 4 days rest before the race. If you feel you can run 2 miles, say, then try to do a 4-mile session with a 1 mile walk to start and a 1 mile walk to end. The additional walking will strengthen tendons and help with muscle fatigue on the day.

In those last 4 days try to fit in a thorough stretching exercise each day. Stretching helps to release the accumulated waste products from muscles into the bloodstream to be got rid off.

But above all, relax. Whats the worst that can happen? A 10k walk - if thats what happens so be it.

Or you could take a leaf out of my book when I think I'm going to be near the rear - a quick investment in some bunny girl ears, a pom-pom (for the rear end!) and a bucket for charitable donations. And, hey presto, you then don't look out of place at the back! (Ok, that's the first completely useless comment of the day, but I'll hazard a guess it won't be the last!)

Dont invest, be MSE and borrow mine :rotfl:

Morning all, glad to see the thread has already been started for the day and im not the first on here getting my fix. Well 4 days to go till my little jog ...actually I still haven't received my race pack details from them which I think is totally rubbish. Have to chase them tomorrow if I still haven't got it! Got a million and one things to do this morning whilst DD is at pre-school but no doubt I will pop back on later :)

Rich do you think I should squeeze one last run in tomorrow morning? Will only be a 15-20 min warm up and stretch run?

No problem, easy runs are fine. But the sole purpose should be to keep loose and supple not for 'training'. By not 'training', your body is strengthening muscles and tendons, and also building up glycogen reserves in the muscle cells (think of a hamster's cheeks bulging a little more each day!)

I am running the 10k at sandringham on the 28th september. feeling very nervous!! I ran the 5k race for life in may and really havent done very much since - its now less than 3 weeks to go (it seemed like such a great idea a couple of months ago!)

I am currently trying to lose weight (have lost 29lb since feb) but still weigh 15 stone. Luckly I live in a very rural area so can pretty much run without being seen. lol

Am currently doing about 2.5 miles. unfortuently its been very infrequent over the last 3 weeks. I am on nights at the moment so the idea was that I would run when I get home in the mornings before I go to bed but I have been so tired that this hasent been possible!! I cant go when I get up as there is not time. I am on nights until next friday morning so have another 9 to go. that only leaves about 8 days before the run to get some exercise in. I am at a loss really for what to do. I am not too worried - I think I will just about be able to struggle round for 10k (6 miles) but would like to do it without requiring hospital treatment at the finishing line!!!

anyway - if anyone has any tips I would be eternally grateful.

    jenny

Well you sound so like me it would be remiss of me not to say anything....

I too did a RFL although mine was in June and with the best will in the world i haven't kept up the training... we were comfortable at 2 miles and managing that at every session and managed the 3 miles on RFL day without stops, but have been stuck at 2 miles once a week pretty much since.....

It is hard when work and family commitments seem to get in the way...

I think Rich has given you the best advice in terms of meeting your short term goal of completing the 10k....

if you want my opinion, (which is less well informed than his but i'll give it anyway :p ) If it were me then i would set out to run 2 x 3 mile races.... and give yourself a reasonable walk break in the middle section..... maybe even allow yourself another wee walk half way thru the second section....

    i.e run 3 miles - walk a bit - run 1.5miles - walk a bit - run 1.5miles

  • Morning all and hello Jenny! :hello: Sally, I'm not an expert but I think if you feel like a gentle run then go for it, it'll help relieve any pre-race stress/ nerves etc.

    Day 2 of 264

Slept much better last night and thankfully not suffering much from yesterday's run - muscles feel a little bit tight but the walk to work (2.5 miles) has stretched them out. I'm thinking I might do the same tonight and tomorrow, and have Monday and Friday as rest days, and a - gulp - longer run at the weekend.

    Welcome Jenny,

Don't worry, everyone has different targets and commitments and this thread is about supporting people in whatever their own goals are. It is also about letting off steam and giving yourself a pat on the back. The posters I admire most on this thread are the mums with young kids like Maz who still manage to squeeze in the exercise. I have no kids and a normal 9-5.30 job so it's easy for me.

Also, don't worry about the 10K, I did one just over 2 weeks ago and there was plenty of people walking after only a few km, so if that happens to you, you certainly won't be the only one!

Now for me. I've been bad. Really, really bad. Since my 10k on the 31st, I've played 1 game of tennis, 1 game of Badminton, 1 game of football and gone on 1 run. Yes, 1. My normal 6K. I've got a game of football (5 a side) again tonight and I have been away on my stag weekend, so I kind of have an excuse, but I still feel I need a kick up the backside. I think I'll need to do a punishing run this weekend to repent for my sins. Of course, I will also aim to do my normal run tomorrow and Friday

What do you think I should do this w/end Rich? Long run to start covering half marathon (or near that) distance, or fast and intense? Given that this will be my first "training" run since the 10K. Give me guidance, O deep heat Vaseline guru.

Thanks Red I think a small run tomorrow will keep me focused (ha ha, chance would be a fine thing!)

Now misses back to your training, don't over do it to start with, you should let your muscles have a day to recover after each run, so you would be better doing Tuesday and Thursday and doing a long run on a Sunday. You are still walking on the other days so that will help you stretch out and keep up the fitness. Guess though if you feel like doing more and your body can cope then its ok. Just don't burn yourself out in the next month then when the marathon training kicks in your bored/tired/fed up with what your doing...if you get my drift?
