As I was visiting my parents on Wednesday I decided to do my shop at their local Tesco. I always have a shopping list and price book with me and I was shocked to find the prices were higher - it wasn't a metro, just an ordinary Tesco. They live in quite a 'nice' expensive area so I assume the prices at their local Tesco reflects that, but it is only four miles away from the one I normally go to. I started shopping and got about a third of the way in before I realised I was going to go well over my budget for the week so I put it all back again, left the shop and went to my regular Tesco and did my shop bang on budget.
I won't buy meat from Tesco anymore as it isn't worth the money. It just shrivels up in the pan to nothing. I found a local butcher and pay a lot more for meat than I usually would from Tesco - £7.50 for a large free range chicken and £10.50 for the good meaty end of a half leg of lamb- but I get so many meals out of each cut it works out cheaper in the long run. The last chicken I had we got five meals out of it, some sandwiches for my husband's lunches and managed to make some soup as well by cooking up the carcass.
As for eggs, I think the price is a complete rip off and I won't buy them ever since they put the price of a half dozen up by 20p in one week to coincide with pancake day. I found a free range egg farm in my village hidden a few streets away from me and pay £1.60 for 12 very large eggs, sometimes so large they don't fit into the packaging properly and I have to adjust baking recipes. And there's always a few double yolkers in there as well."carpe that diem"0 -
Tesco Value Jaffa Cakes have gone up by about 20p or so!
edit; Yeah, local butchers, farmers AND groceries are about the same or cheaper now-a-days.0 -

One of the issues with eggs over the past year has been that for ages they sold eggs sourced from Eastern Europe labelled as British. Eventually the authorities picked up on it and now the eggs are more British!
Of course this means the eggs are more expensive and the price has to go up.
Never mind the fact they were originally charging the 'British' price and pocketing the additional profits.
Even when they get things so terribly wrong Tescos find a way to make some more money out of the situation.
Shop elsewhere is the only solution.0 -

I couldnt either, its a rip off ive noticed prices at tescos fluctuate more than the pound does at the stock exchange:eek: As someone said sorry forgot your name:o the idea is to give lots of vouchers, accept some hike up the prices across the board so that it covers there losses. They are very clever actually,as someone suggested sorry forgot your name too:o they want the monopoly on every trade there is.They give points deals etc in one hand for your custom and loyalty and take the extra money with the other from the price hikes."Every little helps" them!0 -

Keep our butchers and farmers going,at least its got more chance of it being organic
Keep your local greengrocer, newsagent, clothing store, fish merchant, music store etc etc in business vote with your feet as someone else said on here!0 -

I fancied a change from tescos and went to sainsburys the other day. As I was walking round I thought, hmm its def more expensive than tescos, but I did a trolleyfull and taxi home for less than 60.00.
not a great deal of farmshops around london, and I dont have a car to drive out. we can only do what we can do eh! Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
