Too many people buying Tesco Value products?

Just an observation. Just been into my local Tesco's. Had instended to pick up a jar of Tesco Value Chocolate spread, normally 58p for 600g jar (checked receipt I had from buying it last month). Today it was 86p! Thats 26p more than the normal Tesco chocolate spread. I asked a nearby member of staff why the big price jump and showed her my old receipt. She said "so many people are buying it now, so we were told to put the price up". Nice eh? Thought the whole idea of Tesco Value was its meant to be cheaper than the normal Tesco range.
Anyone else noticed a price creep on Value products compared to normal ones?

it's been happening more and more over the past 3 months or so.

value tinned toms were always 15p and now are 21p, value carton orange juice was always about 36-38p and now about 58-59p.

these are just 2 that i've noticed due to the price increase being made in 1 jump, rather than the usual slow price increase of 2p or so at a time.

Thanks RS, I had thought the Value juice was cheaper but don't buy it that often to notice. Not sure what Tesco hope to achieve by making their value range more expensive and in some cases more expensive than their normal range.

I've noticed the tesco value carrots, potatoes and bananas whilst not going up in price the packets have been made smaller.

    A bit sneaky i think.

Probably :p . But its a bit sneaky to up the price so much there either no difference between value and normal or value being dearer.

  • I noticed a while ago that the price of Tesco Value tinned tomatoes (both peeled and chopped) was creeping up...nowadays I tend to stock up on the Napolina or Heinz ones when the four packs are buy-one-get-one free. Only thing is, because I use a lot of tinned tomatoes, I tend to go a bit mad and fill the trolley, then my husband complains that the kitchen looks like a tinned tomato factory when I get home :D

The same business model as the "low-cost" airlines. Whenever I have planned a trip with Flybe et al, I have found that the total cost would be the same or more as a "full-service" airline. However, the lack of frills and cheap-looking packaging gives you the sense of getting a bargain.
  • Something else I noticed...a while ago Tesco seemed to increase the variety of fresh fruit and veg you could buy in the Value range...only some of these have already been discontinued in my local store - packs of garlic bulbs immediately spring to mind. I'm guessing they were too popular...

Hope they still do the value bags of aubergine *yum*

They rely on customers not noticing. What do you think they will be like if they get an even bigger share of the market than they already have, and people have less opportunity to shop elsewhere?

My local store doesn't do Value fruit and veg . But if they continue to hike their prices then I'll be doing all my shopping in either Aldi or Lidl. I was also going to buy SF flour but decided not to after seeing the price hike in chocolate spread. I'll check Aldi's tonight instead. Tesco's loss at being too greedy.
