A second hand bookshop near me is closing and selling off lots of stock. I have had a quick look today and there are quite a few autobiographies.

Apart from the Sean Bean one which I know about (they haven't got any of these!), are there any worth looking out for?

    Thanks

    Donna
  • hmm - just sold a book - not the cheapest listed by quite a few, but probably could have been repriced upwards a bit - to a certain Awesome seller .. And how the **** does he have time to sell that many books given a full time job as well (going by the address)

Why am I feeling apprehensive about this?

Hi Boston, one thought that occurs to me is that your buyer may have had a sale but not been able to locate the item so has bought it from you for you to send to their original buyer ie drop shipped it in effect. Hope that makes sense?

I've never done very well with biographies. I think they tend to be bought as soon as they are released because of media hype and sell lots for the first few weeks and then completely drop off the radar. I think it does depend though on who they are.

I did sell 2 copies of the Sharon Osbourne bio in the same week once, but only for £1 or so. Stuff like the Beckhams or soap celebrities seem to do very poor;y but perhaps it might be worth taking a few titles down and checking Amazon before you commit to buy any in case there are any little gems.

I've got about a dozen here waiting to be either listed or taken to charity shop...Anthea Turner or Des O Connor bios anyone? I bought several box loads of books at auction and they are everywhere you can barely get in my front door. They appear to be stock from a dealer as they all have dealers marks (I assume a form of SKU). I've only sorted 30 so far and have only kept 10 of thise to list as the others were too heavy and too low in the rankings to be worth storing. No little gems yet, a couple at around £10 but low in the ranks so not a good seller and a few better in the ranks but only at the £2-£3 pounds, but I live in hope!

    Hi Donna,

I seem to remember that someone got a good price for a Margaret Rutherford auto/biography. It was in the 'books that sold for a good price thread' so might be worth having a look there? Of course just 'cos one person sold it for a good price no guarantee anyone else wants it!

I haven't sold many biographies either but wonder if some older ones might tend to be worth more than new or recent copies? I guess its all a matter of research? Must admit I tend to steer clear of them unless they are v cheap or v thin [mostly they seem to be huge hardbacks {to match huge egos}??]

    Good luck with it though

It's been the same for me soolin, apart from the James Goldsmith find which I mentioned in the best sellers list. I mainly read biographies, but read them quick and when they're first published, in order to sell them quick :)

We're having a mass decluttering session at the moment, so I think I'll have to say goodbye to selling books :( (I might keep the more expensive ones for Amazon ;)) but I'll keep reading this thread and hope that that "selling fairy" descends on you all soon.

    Good luck everyone :)

Another one hooked..you do realise you will never be able to pass a charity shop again without popping in to browse the books, don;t you?

Grrrrr. I've just been left neutral feedback on Amazon because apparently 'The guide wasn't "new" as specified on the internet'. Well, I have no idea where she got that idea from since it was bought brand new from Waterstones and I never read it. I checked before listing that it was still the current edition. I've had no contact from the buyer to say she wasn't happy. This is not good as I only have 3 other feedbacks (all positive) in spite of a lot more transactions so now my feedback is now a rubbish 75%.

Is there anything I can do? I can't see any kind of option to reply to feedback like there is on ebay.

Edited to say: it was the current edition when I listed it, but it was reissued a couple of weeks ago (AFTER she ordered) so maybe that's her problem? It was listed under the 2005 edition and not 2007 though, so she got exactly what the listing was for.

"Aren't the emails from Amazon regarding the close of a listing misleading?"

Agreed, but what is much more frustrating is the fact that when you re-open for sale a closed item, it stays in teh closed list for weeks - so you feel you have to keep re-opening it. Items sold stay in that list, and there seems to be no way to delete them - so again you're tempted to re-open them

My tip is to organise the closed list in order of deletion date (most recent first) and not try to re-open anything older than your last visit date.

Happy selling on Amazon - Eric
