Compensation for delayed flights Discussion Area

I am a tad worried and would like any comments:
In November I booked 7 tickets for my wife etc to fly out to Malaga as a suprise for her birthday. unfortunatly we had to cancel at the last minute and rebooked for this coming Friday, paying the £25 pound each leg per person plus difference in flight costs (Only up I hasten to add no reduction for cheaper fares) now not knowing when we could make it we only booked our outward journey and lost the other flights, so now we have 4 flights booked one way from Liverpool to Malaga total cost about £500.00. I then booked a hotel for 5 nights another £500:00 and finaly booked our return flights for Wednesday next week (Are you keeping up?) Now with all the bad weather just how do we stand if the airline (Easyjet) are unable to fly us out this Friday as lots of flights are getting cancelled, I spoke with the hotel they have a no refund policy so no suprise there!!! But the ironic thing is we didn't book both legs of the journey on one booking we are been informed we can have a refund for the flight out at todays rate that is a fraction of our actual costs due to rebookin etc but we will not be able to claim for our return flight because thats not their fault??? How is it not their fault if they cannot fly me there how the hell am I supposed to fly back ???
All in all this has cost me in the region of 2.5K so it's fingers crossed for the Liverpool Malaga flight on the 8th of Jan 20100 -
Hi everyone,
can anyone help here?
My flight was cancelled and i was rebooked onto a later flight some 8 hours hence. I defined this a 'delay' and asked for meal vouchers. I was told it was a cancelation and due to, yep you guessed it, 'Extraordinary circumstances' (wx) that Regulation EC261/2004 did not apply and I basically got nothing.
The same thing happened on the Return (6hours).
Anything I can claim for here and has the airline failed in its duty of care?
Thanks for the advice.

WOW! thanks cityboy for the informative and speedy reply!
I will be drafting my letter to our carrier forthwith!
Thought they were being funny usiung the old 'You flight is cancelled not delayed' ploy. The regulation is a bit gray here to be honest as the flight was technically cancelled. Therefore no comp. However they rebooked me 8 hours later (on the same day- no notice). So that to me is a delay. They did get me from A-B so all i wanted was a bite to eat and a call home!0 -
Can anyone help me with my situation. The airline is saying its not their fault (using the extraordinary conditions get out) and insurance is the only way.
Was due to fly from Spain with Thomson on the 5th.- Flight was delayed and was taken to a hotel
- Staff could not confirm when the flight would leave whilst at hotel
- Told flight was due to go the next day at 12:30 on the 6th (didnt happen)
- Then told the flight will take off at 21:30 that day (25 hours delay) but again they said its not definite.
- I had to rebook with another airline due to them being unsure as I had work the next day and went with another airline.
- The original flight did get back - 27 hours after it should have
Am I entitled to claim from them? The are saying only insurance will cover as it was my decision to fly with another airline despite them being vague about the departure time.0 -
Dear All,
Thanks for the mine of information here, it really helps to know other people are in the same situation and everyone is banding together to get something done.
I have read the rules®ulations but am worried because someone just told me I missed the cut off date (7 days after the flight) to ask for compensation. This sounds a little strange to me, but does anyone know how long I have to claim?
Thanks again,

I would be grateful for any advice/comment.
OH and I are stuck in Florida - not fun it is very cold - as our Gatwick flight was cancelled on Thursday. BA could not book us another flight until 13th, Wednesday.
Luckily we are staying with DS, but have had to hire car for another week and are missing things at home, including a dermatology appointment for a mole.
I just want to be home1 I know BA couldn't help the snow, but I was astounded that we have to wait 6 days for another flight.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

Cityboy, thank you very much for your reply.
The flight was an Easyjet Berlin-Madrid, and was cancelled due to "missing personnel" (we heard later on the radio that it was the pilot).
All non-easyjet flights left that day and the weather conditions at both airports were fine.
It seems like a pretty clear-cut case, but we shall see. I have sent a letter off to them after we emailed them and got a response saying "we are experiencing a high volume of inquiries and will get back to you asap".
I was also wondering what I should do about my second flight (late by 3 hours), we were supposed to get some drinks vouchers (supposedly after 2 hours) but were denied them as the steward told us we would only get them if the plane was delayed by over 3 hours. Its a small thing that he lied/didn't know about the procedure, but it annoyed me nonetheless. Is there anything I could do? I have several witnesses, but no name of the steward.
Thanks once again.

Have any of you bought travel insurance? I did and i am claiming huge wedges of cash for delayed luggage and re-routed flights.... for my Christmas as holiday in USANO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0

Ah. Mine said make the claim and they would claim off the airline. Makes it easier for me. We had delayed baggage for 10 days.NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0

It's not specifically drinks vouchers (though that may be the airline's policy) but appropriate refreshments - which leaves a big grey area.
There is also a get out that if supplying the refreshments would result in a further delay to the flight they needn't be supplied.
Maybe tack it on to your main claim but not get over hyped about it.0
