daisyroots no wonder the biscuits were heavy you should have got double the amount of biscuits from the mix
Well, yes twink, you're quite right. Thing is, I haven't made these biscuits for 50 years, when I knew them as Honeybakes. I looked at the 8oz butter and was sure it was too much, so only used half that. Back in the day, we made a dozen at a time, and I distinctly remember 2oz marg. But of course it wasn't enough, and then I realised - double quantities! So I quickly melted another 2oz butter and some more syrup, but still not right.
Why didn't I put all the butter in ? Because I always think I know better than any recipe. That is why Mrs Lawson the Domestic Science teacher and I did not get on. That is why I chucked my DS exercise book away and ran off to join the beatniks. That is why I now have 22 small but delicious handcrafted housebricks stored in an airtight tin. :rotfl:

oh daisyroots, hope you enjoy your bricks
the beatniks are well behind you now daisy so you had better toe the line and follow the recipe
if you are not keen on the butter you could try Clover like GreenNinja did, be less fat0 -
I've just made another batch (yielding 52, a personal 'best'!), and realised when I'd scrubbed my hands afterwards how soft they were (I always manage to get some of the mix on my fingers). Of course, the softness will be down to the oats and exfoliation. Indulging in a kitchen flight-of-fancy (as you do
) I imagined being asked years from now, advert-style, 'Granny, how DO you keep your hands so silky-smooth?'
'Hob-nobs, darling!'
There really are no end to the benefits, girlsEek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -

this is the recipe i use
8oz sr flour
8oz sugar
8oz porridge oats
8oz margarine
1tbsp golden syrup
1tbsp hot water
1/2 tsp bic soda
mix flour, oats and sugar, melt marg, syrup and water in a pan stir in bic soda and add to dry mix, mix well, make smallish balls and put on greased tray and flatten slightly with a fork, 180oc for 15 mins, cool on the tray, you just want them golden in oven not brownto be updated:;)0 -
The last lot of these I made were baked for no longer than ten minutes until just golden, yet inexplicably went rock hard once cooled. A diamond would have had a job cutting through them, never mind a Black and Decker. Yet, even more inexplicably, they were just as popular as previously, described as 'moreish' by one victim - erm... taster - and were all eagerly demolished.
'The Emporer's New Hob-nobs'..? Weird, but I'm not complainingEek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -
18 wokkies? they must have been huge
no idea what happened there p and p would have said oven was too high but then they were just golden, at least they were eaten0 -
You're probably right about the oven, Twink. The dial on ours suggests that it boasts a range of temperatures. The reality is that wherever you set the dial, it actually has only two - barely warm and blast furnaceEek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0
