Well after all the raving I tried these today. I must have made a mistake...

I too halved the mixture for my first try but I don't think I was too successful. I used butter and granulated sugar (should I have used caster?) and the mixture was very, very dry. I had to mould the balls together and when I tried to flatten a little the whole thing just crumbled. They tasted yummy though DH thought they were a bit sweet (is there such a thing?)

Any suggestions on what I did wrong. I'm pretty sure I measured everything out correctly. I double checked.

Sorry Tartan Mum, no idea why it didn't work:confused: I've never halved the recipe, maybe it's just one of those recipes that doesn't take to being halved.

I have just completed another batch. Used demerera sugar this time. Once mixed I divided it into two. Made one batch as normal, and to the other half added coconut:D They are brilliant! Aussie would you like a twink's coconut hobnob:p :rotfl:

So CM the million dollar question is, which one do you like best? :D

Mmmmmm, now let's see......... I really, really love.........both of them:rotfl: :rotfl:

I am very familiar with anzac biscuits, Sainsburys stocks them, and before I could bake my superior version I frequently bought them.:D Only downside to making them myself is I'm sure the commercial ones included a donation to charity, probably a services one?

When I halved the recipe, the mix was very dry and crumbly so I added some milk a dessertspoonful at a time until I thought it was OK. But the teaspoonful sized dollops on the baking sheet were ragged round the edges. others have suggested using a cookie cutter, but I wouldn't have been able to do that with my mix. Perhaps I used too much flour initially, as I haven't got scales I used 1tbs and the same for sugar and oats, then 1dsp for syrup, so probably measurements weren't that accurate.
Will try another batch later. Would a muesli mix be OK to use do you think as it's got bits of fruit and nuts as well?

for some reason halving the ingredients doesnt seem to work, someone else had that problem, the important thing is that the marg is only just melted, think it soaks in too much if over hot for the same reason i would be dubious about adding muesli, it might absorb too much of the fat, though the recipe seems easy it has to be accurate, the syrup is 1 tablespoon, better luck next time TartanMum
churchmouse, how much coconut did you add? sounds nice, dont tell aussie lass i said that though :D

Thanks for all your replies. I am not downhearted!!

I'll try the full recipe again today or tomorrow.

I must admit I didn't lift the butter off as soon as it had melted so maybe that was it. Plus my dry ingredients were very accurate but the syrup and water less so (I only have a full tbsp measuring spoon).

    Better luck next time.........

Ah perhaps the marg was too warm then, I melted it in the microwave for a few seconds with the syrup, so it was quite runny

TartanMum the full tbsp measure should be okay to use, i just have an old fashioned big soup spoon i use, try again though, i have had failures too
sandy, i think the micro is best for melting the fat, the bic soda foams up more i think if it is just warm

Hi twink! The coconut ones are really gorgeous, but don't tell Aussie, she'll get a swollen head and think they're some sort of Aussie biscuit:rotfl: :rotfl:

I wasn't precise in my measure of coconut, just sprinkled it on the mix, then kneaded it in, then added a little more. I'd guess between 1-2 tablespoons.
