With rent rising in London, and elsewhere in the UK, young people are finding that squatting is the way to an affordable home.

The GFC used to stand for global financial crisis. Now it stands for the global financial catastrophe.

Get a grip.
Squatting is illegal (thankfully), in my opinion it's akin to theft.
Have you seen the damage some squatters have done to other people's homes?! The amount of time and effort and money involved in removing squatters?!
But of course, people like that don't care. As long as they're getting something for nothing, who cares who's picking up the bill?
p.s. only taking the bait because I'm bored, even though you're quite clearly a troll.I have a simple philosophy:
Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches.

The recent changes have got rid of squatter rights, but just at a time when squatting numbers are going up.

she says here its more of a protest about the high rents. She says why would I want to be working long hours in a job I don't want just to pay high rents on a home I will never own.
It has got to a point where renters are getting fed up with such high rents.
the other chap makes a good point that there are more empty building than there are homeless people.
He also sounds like he has discovered a loophole in the new laws, the difference between someones residential property or an empty building that was commercial or something else.
I aslo love this docu the art of squatting

Look at Europe and other countries that are a little ahead of the UK in the global financial crisis. Millions of people now squatting because of the GFC.
The global crisis is forcing many in this country to be unable to pay such high rents in the near future.
It just shows how far out of whack things have got, the housing crisis is getting worse and worse. Its pretty obvious to see the way things are heading, benefit cuts and rising rents will mean more poor families are forced into squatting, until the housing market corrects inline with average disposable incomes. The GFC used to stand for global financial crisis. Why do people feel they're entitled to something for nothing? Just because something is hard to attain doesn't give anyone the right to circumvent the process that other hard working and honest citizens go through - especially at the expense of those who have worked within the system and contributed to the society.
Man up, get educated, work an honest day's work and reap the rewards.0 -

If rents were reasonable compared to average earnings, like min wage then no problem. But at the moment you can understand these squaters. The GFC used to stand for global financial crisis. Now it stands for the global financial catastrophe.0 -

That would be fine but, recent Government (i.e. Conservative ones which are obviously doctored to improve the position) still clearly show a jobless population of around 2 million, and around 600,000 jobs on offer.
What do you suggest the over 1,400,000 do to 'man up' as you so wonderfully put it?
I'm a higher rate taxpayer and have never claimed unemployment benefit but have seen what doing so has done to proud men and women who have served this country as police officers, fire fighters and in the armed forces. They feel ashamed with no good reason, suffer from depression and more.
It's easy to be a keyboard warrior and type this crap, but don't buy the Daily Mail rubbish - most people who claim deserve their paltry £60 a week.
As for squatters, I'm ambivalent. I don't believe 'prperty is theft' but I'd be pretty !!!!ed off at the many thousands of empty homes that line the streets of London mostly owned by dodgy foreign business people hiding their money from the taxman.0
