They have to keep going, regardless of how ineffectual it all this, because they are signed into contracts with these WP's.

And, of course, they (various governments) have tried lots of different schemes, and none seem to work that well.

I think, now though, the government are just determined that anyone unemployed needs to be seen to be doing something/anything, regardless of how worthwhile or not, it might be, rather than just signing on, and looking for jobs as and when the mood takes them, which has happened previously.

The problem really is lack of flexibility, because a middle aged person, just made redundant, for example, probably needs a different kind of help to those who will try every way not to find work.

The question wasn't about ticking government boxes, it was about actually looking for a job.

I think it's extraordinary that you would think that there is no advantage in having your cv in the hands of a company that is looking to fill a position.
To me that would seem a far more productive method of gaining employment.

And let's face it, your ways is not working is it?
Sorry? What way is not working? I apply for advertised jobs and write to companies.

I have sent over 300 spec letters in the last year!

If they are looking to fill a role its advertised not 'we will keep you on file'

I have never got a job or an interview from a spec application.

I've got an interview from a spec application.

As a rule, it's always been the applications where I just think 'what the hell' and send them that get me interviews. It's weird.

I do think that spec applications are pretty low success rate, maybe less than 0.5%, but after you've applied to all the job adverts you find online I don't see the harm of doing them.

Mine is running at 0.0% on possibly 1100 specs

Well, that suggests you are very unlucky, or there's something wrong with your cover letter, or people in your industry or area don't employ people on spec.

It's good that you tried, though.

Nothing wrong with the cover letter as I have had response and put 'on file' just no jobs going or they would have been advertised.

Well, I just count that as a polite rejection. It's no different than any other rejection in my book.

It is? Oh dear. Why write back and say they will keep my CV on file (all companies in my industry) and one told me they had just hired via an agency and if they had a copy of my CV they would have interviewed me but for me to keep in touch with them as they are opening more sites and the accounts team would get bigger at some point. I guess that was a fob off.

Yeah, in my book it is a fob off. Unless they say something specific about your application that suggests they read it I don't pay much attention. The only thing useful in that response is the hint to suggest you register with the employment agency which I assume you already had.
