The person in question hadn't worked in over 20 years so I think they would have nothing remotely current skill wise to use in the work place so I think a placement or something in this case is a lot different to people who have only been out of work a year or 2
Many manual jobs skills haven't changed that much in 20 years though and shop work especially hasn't changed only the tills and that wouldn't take long to pick up.0 -

No we didn't there is a difference between MWA and WEX, she had completed MWA before going on the work programme, she did a voluntary 8 week work experience placement with a local company and subsequently got offered a part time position with the company. Read my post where did I say MWA?
Yes people do get referred to MWA, sometimes it is necessary and before anyone is referred the ATM must agree the reasons with the adviser.0 -
In 20 years bar codes have come in and chip and pin and a lot more besides. If this person had the skills needed before why did they only get a job after the placement?
It's not rocket science scanning a bar code or even using a chip and pin. Even the tills are doddle when you have used them for 10 mins. Maybe they didn't want a job before the placement who knows.0 -

I have not said I blame them, people are quick to say JCP do this and that and it is of no help to them, they want to know why we don't offer something useful,. So i ask why they feel that are not in work, maybe I can then I can offer something based on what they feel is a barrier to employment.
i.e . If they have not had an inteview for ages suggest their C.V. may not be tailored to each specific job and may need support and confidence for interviews.
What ever we say it always going to cause offence to soemone by the sound of it.0 -

work expeience is entirely voluntary, jobseekers can choose to do or not do, to start or leave. You show me where in JCP guidance WEX is mandatory.
Yes MWA and other training such as skills conditionality is but please quote correct JCP legislation to me if you are saying I am incorrect.
And if you are so correct how come I am a secretary for a swimming club, my husband a teacher, and we recieve no payments. We chose to do voluntary work and please do not say this is different. Some people actually do choose to help others or even themselves by undertaking actions voluntary.0 -
A colleague had a lady start work today who hasn't work in almost 20 years, she did some voluntary work for about 6 months, then we offered her 8 week work experience
Well since work experience is for 16-24 year olds, unless she was 4 when she was last employed it wasn't work experience she was on! :rotfl:
And, although you are right that work experience is voluntary, in the sense that one cannot be mandated to it, once a person accepts that "voluntary" position, it becomes mandatory and all the usual DWP penalties such as heavy sanctions for non attendance etc. kick in. Like I say, disingenuous at best.0 -

You are really so wrong,,,,, WEX are AIMED at 18-24 but anyone who is claiming a benefit is entitled to under take a WEX or to be 100% politically correct a work together placement if you are over 24. They have the same rules. Go back 18 mmths ago and yes once you started you could be sanctioned BUT NOT NOW!
So no if you start a WEX (or work together placement) you are entitled to leave at any point. NO SANCTIONS Please get your facts correct.
Its when people like you quote the wrong rules that put people of getting of the backside and doing something that may move them forward in the job market.
Lots of people volunteer and I find it has made me many new friends, skills and enjoyment.0 -
