I read on HUKD that Tesco in store are doing a £50 trade in on old tablets for a new ipad might be worth looking at.

I wouldn't really worry about the "you can't download apps outside of the App Store" either, as apps you can download out of Google Play will often be dodgy. Unless you are trying to make your own app or something, Android will give you more flexibility for making things without having to fork out lots of money to do so.

But none of them are an investment, they're all out of date before you've even bought them :D

I would agree with this in the case of the android Tablets.

But not the Ipad. you have at least a year in terms of Hardware and at least 2 years in terms of software

I hope you back up prior to software updates? My wife never backed hers up, and when the latest software update came out she had a problem during installation and lost so many photos etc... of course it was my fault she hasnt backed her phone up since initial set up...

Ipad valid today and updates until 2014 .

    Android Multiple choice hardware .
Hardware usually a year before the next hardware upgrade for most models . Though new different size spec models may arrive .
Software varies usually dependent upon hardware between two and four years .

Android the multiple manufacturers and price range are confusing and giving user more choice .

The question should not be Apple versus Android but what tablet fits my needs . From the dirt cheap inferior older hardware and OS to the top of the range up todate stuff .

But this out of date is silly argument in the world of electronic gadgets . Everything gets supplanted by newer models . But all this old stuff still works as it did on the first day of purchase be it an IPad or a Nexus 10 .

Ipad 3, that didn't have a year! Doesn't even exist any more, really. Pity those poor ipad 3 buyers who bought new and then suddenly found their ipad didn't exist. Especially those who bought close to the ipad4 coming out and didn't get to exchange it to a 4. They're on a piece of hardware that is forgotten about. To make it worse, apple would've known they were releasing that replacement ipad for quite a while before it came out, yet they still sold the 3... Is that good customer care?

Every tablet theoretically has 1 year in terms of hardware. Android, windoze, or iOS (or mixed android). The law says that.

Software only works on people outside of apple (using apple in this case) creating backwards compatible, as well as forwards compatible. The constant iOS updates whilst sound fab causes issues EVERY TIME. In one way or another. "I have apple! It updates often" sounds better than I'm on Android, and we get a new version every so often, some never in the cases of phones or phablets that have branded software. But you never hear about the numerous threads popping up "I have apple! It updates often. This last update messed up my wifi, my calling, my texts, my apps."

They all have good and bad parts, and whilst some apps work on an ipad 1, not all work perfectly as they were intended too. And the issue is, there is no revert option if you download an update and discover it breaks with an older ipad. It usually works on what iOS version you have, and not everyone updates theirs anyway, but it's not guaranteed to work on it.

I have an ipad 2 which works fine, I have a mini which I love and is my preferred, but I also have a motorola xoom wifi that I play around with too, all three work fine despite their varying ages. The only reason the mini is preferred is because I've already put money into the apps which transfer from ipad to ipad, but occasionally iphone/itouch to ipad (not always, some with X2 zoom)

If I were buying from scratch I'd do what I suggested, walk into a store and play with them all and choose from that, rather than someone saying this is best, you simply must go buy it, and as others have pointed out there are other tablets in the same range that are as equally as good.

The differences that noticeable between 3 and version 4 are.... the charging port. yep i feel hard done by apple. there is no difference in terms of retina display, graphics and performance between ipad 3 and ipad 4, the only difference is the charging cable.

so what about all the galaxy note, and galaxy tab owners that have had there tablets less than a few months?

and the other bits you mentioned. you failed to mention the services which are better intertwined between IOS and the apps which for a tablet (which is mainly a consumption device) are optimized and work amazingly well are much better on the ipad than any other device.

I have a galaxy Note phone and never had any trouble with it. I lso have an iPad 1 and I thought I would update and get a Note 10.1 to replace it. I found it wouldn't connect to my home network and sent it back. I've bought an Ipad3 instead.

Nope, never. As I said I copy photos I want to keep off the iPad and the iPhone, and there's nothing else I need to keep on them - apps can just be redownloaded from the App Store.

iPad 3s still exist, they didn't just disappear, and they still work perfectly well - better than iPad 1s which also still work perfectly well.

By "EVERY TIME" do you mean "never"? Because I've never had a problem, not with an iPad, an iPhone 4, and an iPad 2, all bought near to the launch dates so I've updated them quite a lot.
