I can't reccomend the Nexus 7 enough! the size, performance and customization options really set it apart!

Don't get me wrong though iPads are a great piece of kit, and if your familiar with iOS it may be easier to go with one of those even though the price can be up to £100 higher!

iPad 3s still exist, they didn't just disappear, and they still work perfectly well - better than iPad 1s which also still work perfectly well.

By "EVERY TIME" do you mean "never"? Because I've never had a problem, not with an iPad, an iPhone 4, and an iPad 2, all bought near to the launch dates so I've updated them quite a lot.
You cannot buy new from apple a 3rd generation ipad, they don't exist unless it's a refurb, or prebought. For all intents and purposes it's the ipad that should've never been, or maybe that's actually the 4 :D either way, it's dodgy the way that went down

MY ipad has a gelaskin on it, yours probably doesn't, which means apps i have, you probably don't. The issue is between ios, functionality, and apps working on a newer/tweaked os.

Currently my ipad mini and iphone 4s have issues with gmail and emails taking forever to send. This is a casualty from google/IOS 6, but it affects everyone that's noticed it, it probably also affects everyone who doesn't, but as I frequently email myself on the ipad/iphone (photos, notes, junk) to the desktop for saving I have noticed it. it''s anew issue for me, from an old released, but new (to me) update because I'm slow in updating, preferring to have others suffer, not me ;D

It is working out fine for me and the price was right. Have no idea why anyone would pay over the odds for an iPad.

Thanks for all the information, I have decided to go into a well known store to try them out. I hear that the biggest problem with the iPad is having to use iTunes whereas the problem I have had with my Samsung tablet is that the Apps move around and I tend to get extra ones which I have not chosen to install being put on the first screen. I do admit that it is an old tablet. The main reason for my question was regarding accessibility of files etc. Which are easier to get to given that I am not familiar with either operating system, apart from ios on my iphone which I only download photos from it or add songs via iTunes.

never ever happened to me through Google Play .

Home screen apps shortcuts yes if your settings are set to do so .

Files are certainly accessible in Android .

Thanks jje. I am thinking of when for instance on holiday I want to transfer photographs straight to the tablet from an SD card so that it removes the need to take a few of them. Especially, if away for a while.

You can do that with the ipad as well. Just have to buy an adapter for it.

Thanks for all the comments, still very confused although did go into a well known department store, which has a good reputation and decided that the sSamsung Galaxy Note 8" seemed to fit my needs, although still not convinced that I should ignore the ipad as so many people rave about them. It really is a hard decision, especially as I can't afford to make a mistake!
