Good Bye to my TV Licence

Options
Will be more than happy to see the back of it, I've cancelled my TV subscription to Virgin Media so in around 3 weeks I will on longer need the TV Licence.

Saving my self around £42 per month by ditching VM & TV Licence and shifting all my TV viewing to online services (legally of course) :T

I can watch everything I ever want to watch via my Xbox using Netflix, BBC Iplayer, 4OD, Demand5 & Blinkbox although the latter will be sporadic as its pay per episode or series

ITV isn't included on the list yet as they aren't on the Xbox but I can't remember the last time I watched any of the channels

I even trialled using the online services just to see how it went before I made the decision yesterday, seems weird that you don't need a licence to watch exactly the same programs as everyone else just because its via a catch up service.

Not that i'm complaining it's money in my pocket that I can use on other things:p

As more and more people cancel TV licence for online viewing (legal or otherwise) a(nother!) black hole is going to appear in the financing of the Beeb-this will trigger a change to the law and the attempted imposition of a levy on ISPs (and hence customers)to pay for it.

That's possible, although it might impact on Government policy for the expansion of the Internet.

However, let's not let the possible change to taxation in the future detract from the ability to save £145.50 per year now.

I can't see that happening anytime soon if ever to be fair, ISP's would put up a pretty good fight which I think they would win.

Retailers no longer have to report that they have sold equipment which can view or record live TV which makes me think that going down an ISP route won't happen.

Anyway I'm not dwelling on that point unless it becomes a reality
  • Don't you have to have all your TV receiving equipment removed so that you cannot receive live broadcasts? I don't think they just take your word that you don't watch live TV.

But if they do, then you will be able to legally leech off those of us who still pay the licence fee.

The equipment stays its supposed to be de-tuned and not connected to an aerial, they will come around to check every so often however they won't be gaining access to the property to look and yes I can leech off everyone else paying the fee however I will be doing it the legal way by using the On Demand services my ariel won't be connected.

    No.

TVL don't think that, either. But when all is said and done, that's what it comes down to. (See also: Council Tax discounts, etc.)

This is no more "leeching" than people who walk to the shops is leeching from drivers who pay for the upkeep of the roads.

Erm..... you still need a TV license to listen to any BBC radio station and watch iplayer is realtime mode, or any "LIVE" TV online.
