Because the are fitted as standard on recent cars and automatically turn on when the engine is.

Has to be a wind up!

why should correctly adjusted dipped headlights annoy anyone?

    there are far worse things

    Not indicating

Cutting straight across a roundabout from the outside lane

Not using lights when its raining/ dusk

using fog lights when its not foggy

the list goes on but using dipped headlights in daylight isnt one of them IMO

I am not a prat - all that happened when I saw one of these idiots was because I was trying to tell them I just reduced my speed to 30MPH all the way home - I think it caused quiet a hold up all because the prat with his headlights on!

There is a (reasonable) argument that illumination makes the vehicle more easily identified to drivers and pedestrians alike - It registers with the brain as a visual cue, where a bodywork colour might not. As a biker, my beams are always on and far better then a flouescent bib.

I honestly can't believe you're unaware of this - it's been a requirement on all new cars since February 2011 and on trucks and busses since August last year.

The reason? - the same reason as crash helmets, seat belts, air-bags, rear fog-lamps, not using hand-held mobiles while driving etc etc.

It saves lives - can you remember the furore against all of the things I listed.

I didn't see 'to look like a prat' listed as a reason for any of them though.

In several countries in Europe you will be stopped and fined for not having lights on.

You are not being forced to use them at all - so just forget it.

Edit: People with headlights on are NOT idiots - unless they are flashing them aggressively, of course - but I don't think that's what we're discussing here.

And to see so**ing bikers with their light on is just as annoying!
