Never do Business with Friends...

Hello Everyone,

Hopefully wont be too much bed time reading.

My friend has a flat which she has a mortgage and now she is living at her nans house which the mortgage free.

I am currently living in the flat. Unofficially renting the flat and I don't have a tenant agreement.

I have also got Sky and this is under my mates name, as she didn't want anything under my name.

Anyway, I am now wanting to move out. There will be a termination fee. Now, who pays this??? Should it be myself, or should it be my mate who insisted to have it in her name?
There is a chance she will have the sky moved to her current house.

Name changes cant be made on Sky accounts.

But what is your advise folks?

Rich :)

You use it, you pay it. It's the only honourable thing to do. It's not like she's throwing you out. Why would you want to saddle your "mate" with an early cancellation fee for something you have had the benefit of?

Do what is fair... which seems to be: you wanted Sky, you want to terminate, you pay the fee.

What's the fee going to be? Unless the sky gets moved to her new address I would suggest that in the interests of remaining friends you suggest splitting the fee. You've had the benefit but it's in her name (technically her liability) at her insistence.

It's in her name at her insistence but I bet she didn't insist that the OP bought Sky in the first place.

I Knew this problem would happen. I did say to my mate if it had been in my name I would be able to transfer it to my new address with no problems. I currently pay £650 a month and that includes bills. Unfortunately I don't know how much the mortgage payment is. Surely some of the bills will be cheaper in the summer would be able to absorb some of the fee.

Neither of you can call the other a friend - you both seem to be in this for your own interests. Friends don't try to have each other over.

I'm going to disagree with everyone else :D it's a service to her property (which it would seem she is renting out without declaring if she doesn't want anything in your name?) and she requested it to be in her name so move out without cancelling, if she then wants to cancel the service (in her name to her property) then she should pay.
    Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

    December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.10

Business is business I guess. Because the other argument is that she is charging the same rent throughout the summer months. What I meant is charging the same bills ect....
If I had Sky in my name in the first place, then I could transfer it the new place. She wanted little people to know I was living in this flat.
I just cant want wait to get my own place and everything in my own name. Its a difficult one I know!

That is correct. Its a very informal thing. I don't see any bills. At first she didn't want my driving licence registered to the flat address!

If I want to save the friendship, then I should take the hit of the termination fee.
