It's designed to appeal to her new Guardian readers clearly, but I rather hope that a mass market softback follows.

Well she is hardly likely to appeal to Daily Wail readers is she???:rotfl:

Jack's autumn-winter courtship of Allegra is traced and as Allegra is also a chef, at that point the recipes do take a upturn, but the eye is still on frugality.

Has anyone seen/used book Economy Gastronomy that Allegra contributed to? Based on a series on TV about 5 years ago which looked at a handful of families where food waste amongst other things, was an issue............had me and my friend shouting at the TV in disbelief at the ineptitude of some of these families but I guess it was a well edited programme for maximum effect..............! the recipes where very good and I still use lots of them - worth a look :)

  • Store cupboard staples: bought a huge 4kg bag of Tilda Basmati in MrTs yesterday. I know its not the very cheapest brand but at £7, that's a good deal for such nice rice. I am planning a mexican rice soon - sweetcorn, kidney beans, peppers, tomatoey chilli sauce - if anyone has a tried and tested recipe I'd be grateful to see it. I love the Uncle Ben's microwave version, but its really not MSE or probably very healthy.

  • Given the interest in food stuffs here, I have a question. We all have seen food prices creep up and have heard one justification that the increase in transport costs is driving it. Now that fuel prices have fallen, has anyone noticed the linked price reductions?

I have this book, but did not see the TV programmes. The concept has stood the testof time, but perhaps not been very fashionable for a few years. I glanced at my copy a few days ago and pondered that when Winter arrives these are the type of recipes we will enjoy again. That said, as there are just two of us here, I need to downscale some of them. There are a couple of make now bake later cake/cookie recipes that are really useful too.:)

    Good Evening :hello:

Upsidedown Bear - I had to look up what an apple cinnamon duffin was. Glad I did - they look lush :D Do you have them hot or room temp? BTW - that look's like DP's painting style, he never gets pretty pics though, only splatters........:D

maddiemay - glad the electricals were sorted out  Actually, I wonder if you could answer another query for me. With 'modern' touring caravans, how *easy* is it to use them in the colder weather. ie has electrical hook up meant that you can have heat 24/7 if you want to, and what about insulation levels/glazing? We stopped in a static last year - abeit in September, and in Cornwall - despite the fact that the tail-end of hurricane summat was passing through. And with the double-glazing/central heating and gas fire, we were much warmer than we would have been at home at that time. I know for tourers, obviously you've got to be able to pitch up on solid ground - not a quagmire. But I was wondering how cosy you could be in one as the weather turned. We saw quite a few caravan parks on our travels last week, and they were all well populated with tourers. I agree, Allegra and Paul's series was really good, and they are both excellent chefs. I'm not surprised you can still find value in their book. I seem to recall liking their approach, but there wasn't much for me as a veggie.

Igamogam - I bet as many DM readers buy JM's books as her target audience of G readers...... except DM readers request that amazonian delivery takes place under cover of darkness and plain brown paper packaging, lest the neighbours see........ :rotfl: How are you anyway, love?

Hey up supersaver - good bargains :D Did I see you say you'd bought some of the lentils as well? Cook your rice by the absorption method, and you'll never eat packet rice again :D

INOD - *snort*, I love how you apply logic to such matters..... :rotfl: Besides which, sod the fuel costs, do you know how much it is to hire celebrities to plug your brand on TV for 1 minute a time, because everyone has gone to [STRIKE]Coventry[/STRIKE], [STRIKE]Icelandia[/STRIKE] your competitors :rotfl: tsk, you clearly are not seeing things from the hard-pressed, family-orientated, salt-of-the-earth grocer's point of view..... :rotfl:... And you know I'm pulling your leg - right? :D

    Snagged a NSD today :j

Snagged some free apples today :j

Snogged DP just now :j...... OK, so that was TMI...... :rotfl:

    *sigh*

    Dinner was Buddha bowl. And it was a 'genuine' one - ie using up random stuff :rotfl: It was OKish. There was definitely a flavour or note missing - I want to say salt, but there was sufficient salt in it, including a couple of spots of soy sauce. But definitely some sort of savouriness... I was going to put chopped coriander in the bean part - but I forgot :( Anyway omelette Buddha bowl;

    032_zps0c6c2a1b.jpg

From the bottom, we have cous cous with sweetcorn, grated carrot and broccoli. On top of that is red kidney beans, cooked up with onion and leftover shredded beetroot, cumin, sesame oil, soy sauce and spritz of lemon juice. On top of that is an omelette (which wasn't as anaemic as it looks in the pic - the light was directly overhead), which was topped off with some lentil dhal, sesame & onion seeds. It was ok and filled a gap :D

    Today I am grateful for these 3 things;

for the considerate people who I encountered today - Kind :D

for the person who went to the trouble of putting out a bucket of windfall apples for folk to help themselves - Generous :D

for DP bringing me a hot drink, just 'because' - Thoughtful :D

Thank you so much for dropping in, reading commenting and applying logic all over this thread. I enjoy your posts and remain appreciative that you make the time to drop by.

    See y'all later.

I wonder if this reply will post, they weren't earlier. Just bought Allegra's book for 1p from Am@zon, plus postage. I love 1p books and earrings... and necklaces...

GP's post of the DM readers hiding Jack's book reminds me of DD's tales of all those who come in to her discount supermarket with M&S and Waitrose bags. Well, the Waitrose bags are a dead giveaway, the nearest one is 30 miles away...! I like their cloth bags myself.

  • Good Morning :hello:

mcculloch - good on yer, cloth bags is all we'll be able to use just now, lest we are 5 penny piece millionaires :D

So Tuesday. Where are we at with everything? I'll be getting the TV guide today, as I'm the right side of town to visit the retail park where mrS is. I shall stock up on Tbags too. As, as has been pointed out on here, these dang supermercados (all of 'em) tend to squirrel away their 'valoo' lines for the 6 month period of 'C' mas. To make way for festive fare. So I'll stock up on 'em now - can't imagine DP without tea  :rotfl:

Dinner this evening is Jollof rice. An African dish. I have made it before.

Have a fantastic day folks, and thanks for being here :D

    See y'all later.

Oh my goodness, has that really been happening? !

To my mind, the only time food should ever be controversial is when it's okra. And even then, I will eat a few in a curry.

    What are people like!

Even on the Guardian pages I see people sticking the knife out of some weird idea that she wasn't poor enough or for long enough or has a job now. Poor lass!

Anyway, need to refrugalise my diet as I've been doing Slimming World - not as cheap as you can make your life if you eat a lot of reduced pies and muffin things. Could do with some more inspiration.

And - I had to chuckle at this, when OH and I lived in rural Dorsetshire we often had a day out on a Saturday at one of the lovely towns or coastal areas of the county or East Devon and nearly always fitted in our weekend shop too, since we were always keen to get going and putting the working week behind us we mostly forgot our shopping bags:(. Thus we have a large selection of bags for life from most of the supermercados known to man (well UK man:rotfl:)

We now live almost 30 miles from any one of them except Mr T and Mr A*di, I wonder what the shop staff make of us:rotfl::rotfl: (Tight old gits I expect as we have been in this county for 3 years and they are becoming a little tatty). On holiday last week I had the rare (first time in 3 years:() treat of shopping in Waitrose and was really miffed that there were no cloth bags on display:mad:
