OK - I've tried a couple of things. 123-reg dont give free email you have to pay 5.99 per month.

I'm looking at setting up the outlook. My broadband provider is Virgin.

How do I physically do this:

To be able to send mail, you need to set the outgoing mail server to whatever SMTP server you want to use --

Which programmes should I be looking at to do the above?

If your provider is Virgin, they will have given you a free email address. The SMTP server will be smtp.<email_domain>. So, if your Virgin email is JoeBloggs@virgin.net, the smtp server should be smtp.virgin.net. These are the possible SMTP servers that Virgin use:
    • smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
    • smtp.ntlworld.com
    • smtp.virginmedia.com
    • smtp.virgin.net

The port number should be 465.

The SMTP username is your Virgin email address (with whatever password you have set up for the Virgin email account).

Disable "secure password authentication" and set the "connection security" to SSL.

I don't use Outlook, so these settings might be worded slightly differently. Here's a guide for Outlook 2007:
    http://help.virginmedia.com/system/viewArticle.jsp?uuid=9393D701-2C08-4550-9388-4BDD4992C36D

To stop spammers, Virgin require you to validate any non-Virgin email addresses you want to use by logging into your account via the Virgin website:
    http://help.virginmedia.com/system/viewArticle.jsp?uuid=36349338-7EC2-4531-996D-BEE2323AECD9

And that should enable you to send email using your new domain name. :)

Well I definitely have the email address set up and it works from domainlive.

I did have to do something with the DNS - I had to prove that I owned the domian so that the email worked.

The crazy thing is, the email will still not show up in Oultook 2013. I've tried adding the email address and entering the same password that I used to access it on domainlive, but it comes up with messages saying it can't connect to server using encrypted. Tried the unencrypted option but still no go.

Can anyone tell me how to do this 'manually'?

    Service is
    Microsoft Exchange or Compatible
    Outlook.com or Exchange
    Pop or Imap

Which one of the above should I select?

    IMAP. :)
    Next obstical is :
Server Information. What should I put in here?

The IMAP server details (e.g. your free email account at GMX, Sky, Virgin, 1&1... ) -- whoever it is you want to use. For my free GMX account, I use:

    Server name: imap.gmx.com
    User name: user123@gmx.com
Password: (The password I used to sign up with GMX.)

Port settings may vary depending on the level of security offered, but I think SSL is pretty much standard, so you should be able to use:

    Connection security: SSL (or SSL/TLS)
    Port: 993
    Authentication method: normal/unencrypted password

    Hope that nails it!

    Thanks Esuhl - much appreciated.

yes, my internet provider is Virgin. I don't use their email though.

I've been messing with this for about three hours today and I'm not getting anything done. Son home from school soon, followed by hubby wanting tea :-(

I'll pick back up on this later tonight or tomorrow morning. Thanks so much for your help and I reckon with all the above info I will nail it too.

    No worries!

That's fine -- you don't need to. It's just that, for no particular reason, Virgin chose to use the free email address and password as the log-in details for their SMTP servers.

You'll need enter your Virgin email details into the SMTP settings of your email client (i.e. Outlook) in order to be able to send email from your PC, no matter whether you are sending from user123@virgin.net, user456@yahoo.co.uk or me@mydomain.co.uk.

I'm still working on this .....

I've got all the email accounts set up and displaying correctly in Outlook.

All the email address send correctly (can see them in the sent box), but for some reason the incoming email isn't being delivered to the inbox'

If I log on to the original sky email - the messages are being delivered there. Why aren't they showing in the 'Outlook' inbox?
