Where did you buy your domain name?
Before you buy anything else! Check to see what you extras you might have gotten!

Some domain retailers will give you a few email mailboxes and a few Mb's of web space for free. Others will just give you the domain name and let you sort out the rest...

I clicked on their website but there is too much info - totally confuses me.

I need something much more simple :o

But their mini webhosting plans are dirt cheap.

But then you'd also need to direct your domain name to them. DNS I think it's called.

A learning curve ahead for you I feel, or you'll have to get someone else to do it for you. But that'll mean trusting them with your passwords for the web host account.

Hi

I got it from 123-Reg I looked at my invoice and I just bought the name for two years.

I just found this which looks really easy, it's got free tools to help you build a simple website http://www.hostpapa.co.uk/

Any opinions on hostpapa?

The only downside to that is when you reply they will get joe-bloggs@sky.com. as the sent address

To have a "proper" send/receive e-mail address you need a domain name and a web hosting package- this will give you access to a mailserver. Should be around £40 a year.

No you don't. I registered mydomain.co.uk for a few quid a year and set any incoming emails to go to user123@gmx.com. I then set the "from" field in my email client to me@mydomain.co.uk.

Emails arrive in my free GMX inbox, and when I reply, the recipient sees me@mydomain.co.uk as the sender. They'll never know about the GMX address.

For a single email address, paying for hosting is just a waste of money. Set the computer to download emails and store them locally (so you can back them up regularly... just in case).

I'm sure you could use a free Sky email address instead of GMX, and use Outlook as your email client (although I use Thunderbird).

I'd be quite happy to do that. I've got Outlook but I don't know how to get my emails to show up in it - any ideas?

According to the site you have free webmail email account
https://www.123-reg.co.uk/domain-names/domain-name-freebies.shtml?

All you need to do is set your outlook to pick up from the webmail account.
http://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/answers/Video/how-to-add-your-email-account-to-outlook-com-4641/

Then you can send and receive email using outlook with your domain name...

Don't bother with Live Domains or the like.

Just set Gmail to use your mailbox SMTP and you can mail from @youraddress.com using Gmail and it'll look like it comes from your address.

However Outlook.com (which I use) made this easier. Just add your email address, confirm it, then send from it and it uses their servers but "from" your @youraddress.com so to other users, it looks fine.

Otherwise you will get the "From: You@sky.com on behalf of You@youraddress.com" which isn't desirable.

This is how I have it.
But then I have free web hosting for life :D

You just need to add a new email account and set the incoming mail server to the GMX/Sky/1&1 IMAP server (i.e. imap.gmx.com -- check the help pages on the email provider's website if you're not sure).

To be able to send mail, you need to set the outgoing mail server to whatever SMTP server you want to use -- usually this would be your ISP's (i.e. smtp.tools.sky.com for Sky Broadband), but maybe 1&1 have an SMTP server, and a few free email providers (such as GMX) also have SMTP servers you could use. Again, check the help pages on the relevant site, particularly for the most secure mail server settings (e.g. port numbers, encryption, etc.).

Once you know all the details, you need to add a new account in Outlook:
