I need a new computer.

the op hasn't had to spend any money to re-install windows and fix the problem of a slow machine
the xp support issue is overblown, and irrelevant at this time, 8 months in advance of the proposed deadline. Let's all throw our working machines away and buy a new one in case we happen to hit the million in one chance of getting infected without a backup or a virus scanner makes no sense from a financial. moneysaving, or ecological standpoint, unless of course your company stands to make money from it.!!

I received my air pressure can and give my computer a good clean. Still noisy. But there was an enormous amount of dist shifted from the fan over the CPU area and the fan at the power supply unit. Can't have done it any harm.
Anyway, my CPU is an Intel Celeron 320 Prescott 90nm Technolog. Have I provide the correct information to your question james smitha?
PS Would my computer possibly run even quicker after cleaning as I said above. Since turning it back on it seems even quicker. But it could be my imagination.0 -

Proper cooling can definitely improve performance(as in removing dust from fans and inlets), as can an inexpensive Graphics card. £20 can get you a half decent card that will definitely make a difference to video performance.0 -

Looking more closely at your Motherboard...it doesn't appear to have a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot, but perhaps only AGP 8x. The cards available are much more slow and expensive.0 -

I wouldn't be looking to spend anything more on that machine. How much have you spent thus far?0

Roughly.......£3.99 on high pressure spray to clean; £5 for a second-hand but working DVD RW; £9 for 80GB HD. I think that's it. And it's working really well thanks mostly to help I received here. But I'd like it to be a little quieter.0

Sounds good. Have you narrowed it down to the CPU fan? (Listened with the side of the Tower off)
Could it be the PSU fan?
You can often just put a drop of oil in.

It is the CPU fan. It's just the sound of it's high revolutions.0

I installed one of these Zalman CNPS7000B-CU http://www.quietpc.com/s478-coolers . It's running much quieter now. :-)0
