Thanks NiftyDigits. I've managed to re-install and it's working a lot faster. I installed the most recent version of Avast Free Antivirus and it's causing things to slow down in a big way. I've seen that others have had this problem too by doing a google search. I haven't found a conclusive answer to the problem. Does anybody here know how to remedy this? There seems to be a conflict between XP Pro and the latest version of Avast. Should I go back to AVG?0

I often help family and friends with their pc trouble, having quite a bit of experience in the subject and after reading the specs and the time you've had the pc It looks like I'd suggest not wasting your time cleaning it up and simply buying a cheap new one that'll run 100 times better and more efficently! There's only so much cleaning and wiping you can do before your hardware literally stops working because of its age! You can find pc's that'll do everything you need and more for a crazy low price around £250!
Check out websites like dinopc.com or meshcomputers.com
NEVER BUY FROM RETAILERS LIKE PC WORLD - You often get ripped off on the price!
Hope this helped!

You have to be careful not to install any Toolbars that come bundled with the programs.
Use Microsoft Security Essentials for now. Opt out of MAPS.
Remove all traces of Avast(including any Toolbars) by uninstalling and reboot. Then you can install MSE. Let us know if it's better.0 -
Yes...NiftyDigits. I did by mistake install the google toolbar I think and Chrome but I uninstalled them immediately afterwards but my machine was still slow. Might the damage have already been done? Anyway, having uninstalled Avast, it back up to speed. I'm now installing Microsoft Security Essentials.0

It's working very well now. Should I install another anti-virus programme?0

I use a HOSTS file, but websites like Quidco might not work.
So perhaps Malwarebytes AntiMalware
You have a PM.0 -
Thank you NiftyDigits and Closed and everybody else who helped. It's a lot less stressful using this computer now. :-)0

If possible, there's one other thing I would like to do with my computer. It makes so much noise. The noise is obviously coming from the fans and mostly from the CPU fan at the best of times but goes into over-drive when the weather gets a little hotter. Is it possible for me to improve by getting a better fan or fans etc? Thanks.0
