AMEX did a "small business" day a few months back and I was surprised to see my local family butcher accepts it. Never noticed before now but steak for supper it is.
Often I ask if retailers accept it (often smaller ones) but sometimes I just stick the card in the reader and see what happens.

Asking is often a mistake. A lot of cashiers don't have a clue and will just say no.

Since Lloyds and Amex started working together the number of smaller retailers that accepted it increased dramatically because Lloyds cardnet now includes Amex and makes the whole process less hassle. In recent years AmEx have also reduced their fees considerably. They are still typically higher but no way near as much as they used to be.

Vue Cinema, KFC and Caffe Nero are the only large chains that we go to with any regularity that we find dont accept the card. A couple of local pubs and restaurants dont either, though a few can but choose not to.

KFC and Cafe Nero varies by franchise as well. Both my local KFC and Cafe Nero accept it but I've been to ones that do not.

My local Nero is in a House of Fraiser so they can accept it by putting the transaction through the HoF card machine which they go off to borrow from another POS but their own card machine rejects AmEx

Seems a bit of an odd setup if its just a franchise level choice

Its probably much cheaper for HOF to take Amex than it would be under a Caf! Nero account.

ShakeShack is the only place that I have found does not accept Amex so far, everywhere else has.

Kingfisher (B&Q and Screwfix) don't accept it.

@Drp8713, I recently was told I couldn't use it at the coffee shop I frequent. It seems they just changed their card machine and it doesn't accept AMEX (shame). It does seem that they do charge 1% more than the other card suppliers
