Who Does/Does Not Accept Amex?

  • I would like to add that many retailers don't accept AMEX because there are several drawbacks to the system.

Our site www.refreshcartridges.co.uk DOES accept AMEX but not only was it a sod to set up (you need an AMEX merchant number in addition to your regular merchant number, the cards have different number of digits in card number + CV2 code etc) but it is also very expensive with little leeway for reducing the amount we pay to in merchant service charges. We currently pay around twice as much to take an AMEX payment when compared with a Mastercard or Visa credit card transaction.

Thought I’d just chip that in :D
  • Travelex will accept Amex, but only corporate ones. Plus they will charge an extra 1.75% fee on top of their normal commission if you use it.

I suspect the 1.75% charge is a charge imposed by AMEX rather than Travelex. Strange they only accept corporate Amex's and not normal ones. Mind you if its a corporate AMEX you wouldn't really care as it will be the company picking up the bill rather than the individual.

  • Currently Tesco.com (groceries at least) aren't accepting Amex. According to the man on the help desk the web site is refusing to accept Amex cards as they have a different number of digits they have as opposed to a 'normal' card.

Not happy and no guarantees on when this will be fixed.

Are you sure? Can't see why that be should be all of a sudden and the website still features the Amex logo

Amex would fix any problem PDQ at Tesco

I saw Martin on the 5 o'clock show today recommending this card for cash back. I took this avdvice a few months ago and now regret it. There are just not enough retailers out there that accept it. I doubt I will reach the spending levels that I did on my Tescos card. I suggest this card is not recommended without a caveat that you will be limited as to where you can use it.
  • I don't have that many problems. it depends what you want to buy. Petrol, groceries, hotels, air tickets, car hire, Amazon - all work fine for me and I keep a grubby mastercard for the other stuff :D

I have to disagree, at least in my experience. I use my Amex Platinum (2% CB) for literally 90% of purchases and my Egg Money (1% CB) for the remaining 10%, but my Nationwide for overseas (no charges). All my groceries and petrol are charged to Amex (at Tesco, Somerfield and Morrissons and Shell for petrol), business expenses in hotels are charged to Amex (Premier Travel Inn, Holiday Express, Travel Lodge etc), monthly Internet access bill (Plus.Net), and regular shopping (M&S, River Island, Clarks, Boots, Next, Argos). About the only shop that I could use Amex at but don't is House of Fraser where their own storecard gives better rewards!

The only shops that don't seem to accept Amex are less mainstream, in my opinion/experience.

I have found places which take Amex but no not display the fact. It can often pay to ask. ODEON cinema is my recent find. They just had the usual VISA and Mastercard stickers up when I went to buy tickets, but I asked if they took Amex and the cashier said yes!! They also took Amex to pay for the popcorn and drinks.

No the charge is imposed by Travelex due to what they are charged by Amex. I have no idea why they accept corporate only, im surious now so will ask next time im there.

But you are right, people dont mind what the extra charge is if their company is picking up the bill.
