  • Hi everyone, Im after a bit of advice if possible

My mum has just applied for a free boiler, as the one she has is an old backboiler from 1980/90's ( sorry i dont have exact model)

My mum is 62, working 2 jobs, on working tax credit, yet when she has applied through N Power, she's been told that she would have to contribute £1200.00 due to the carbon savings (£1633) wouldnt cover the amount of the installation (£2682.00)

My mum cannot afford £1200.00, hence the reason for requesting a new free boiler.

They have offered 12 months interest free, but shes not wanting to go down the credit route. Is there anyway she can appeal, can she try with a different company or do they all have the same criteria?

Any information would be helpful and much appreciated

    Thanks in advance

  • My mum just paid £65 for an inspection, they were at her house all morning and then it turns out it will cost her almost £300 for the boiler and eon have decided to add another £250 service charge so it will cost her in fact not far from £700 to get a boiler, she hasn't the money for another inspection and definitely not the FREE boiler eon are offering.
Where do i complain??? I'm furious!!!

    Can someone help please.

I am on ESA and have a son Living with me half time. However I do not get the child benefit so cannot prove this happens, apart from him having his own bedroom and his stuff all over the house. My boiler does not work and so I have no heating in the house. The boiler is very old.

BGas have said I am not entitled to a free boiler because I cannot prove my son lives with me half the time. Yet their advert does not mention this. And MSE also says qualification is benefit plus a child living at the address. My son is aged 13 and cold. Any advice please?

So I got a mail back from the person who did the survey. He did confirm they can't do any physical inspection and that it is assumed based on visual inspection or feedback from the current owner. As the owner at the time told him it was a mid 80's house this is why this was recorded. I advised him this was incorrect and he asked for anything I had to prove this was incorrect. I had a copy of the land registry document when the house was first issued to the first owner and provided him a copy. In response, he agreed that it was highly unlikely that our house had cavity insulation but the current EPC couldn't be amended although I did have an email agreeing that the EPC was wrong.
I have contacted British Gas today and although at first they seemed to suggest that they would have to go by the EPC, after a chat with her colleague, they have processed my application. They didn't even ask for the email chain with the surveyor.
So if your EPC is wrong, you could do as I have done, they may just process anyway without further evidence. After all, their surveyor is going to investigate in more detail I'm sure before they agree to any work going ahead.
Be warned though, first available appointment for me is MARCH so you're not going to get anything done soon.

now waiting today for cavity wall insulation survey to be conducted, it's done through the local council by contractor should cost £99, had to wait about 6 weeks. FOR SURVEY AND INSULATION

We had a BG survey, apparently Dormer Bungalows are not eligible.

Anyone know of any places that sell "loft insulation" on the cheap...
  • Decided to fill out some of the forms on these free boiler/energy saving websites. Had a couple of calls, one to say my existing boiler was not eligible as it was not a combi! and the other said they could replace it but I would need to contribute £500. I'm not knocking the £500 as is certainly cheaper than £2500 but do these FREE boiler's actually exist? Am I going to the wrong place?

Any other people have the same experience? Any suggestions of places to ask that might actually install a boiler for free?

    Thanks!
  • I contacted energy save uk in November 2014, and they said I would be able to get a free boiler replacement under the governments scheme and passed my details onto carbon active. They sent someone out to my house to check the paper work and to take photos of each room and the boiler, all was going well until I had a phone call to say that the government has changed the scheme I will now have to pay a contribution towards the boiler, can they do this? I told the lady on the phone that I don't have any money to pay a contribution, hence why I applied for a boiler replacement under the eco scheme. Does anyone know of a company that will replace the boiler for free? My boiler is G rated and I claim child tax credit and our income is below £15000.

If you look back at the other pages of this thread you will find the answers you need.

Personally, after months of trying and reading here, we have given up on getting a free boiler, there is no money left in any pot to fund them.
We are buying our own this week.

    Good Luck.
