Hi, if my mum who is over 70 and on state pension lives in a property owned by me and my brother, is she eligible for the boiler grant (or any others), or is this excluded as treated as our property? She does not pay us any rent but is responsible for all household bills.

Not likely Mobile, copy of deeds is needed.

Thanks - thought as much, though not sure how that differs from paying rent in a private property.

Needing a copy of the deeds is a recent requirement on my application, so maybe something to do with deliberate delay.

I would say it's worth enquiring about due to her age. If tenants of Private landlords are eligible , it seems to me that it is the person living in the property who has to be eligible rather than who owns it. They can only say No. Obviously the boiler has to be eligible.

Is it a granny flat, an annexe, a part of your property ?

Simon BG reduced our homecare agreement down to £6. There is a one year guarantee which potterton increase to 13 months if you register with them.

Contacted British Gas homecare who said i could have a discount when my contract ran out late next summer.
Mentioned a friend had her contract restarted and said less risk to them with new boiler, put on hold and transfered to another department who gave me just over £9 discount per month satrting end of Dec 2013.

A result - thanks for the advice again, Scottishmummy.

Hi, its not a granny flat. She is the sole occupant of the property. Its just that for various reasons we purchased the property for her to live in.

Does seem strange that if she was paying me rent would be eligible.
  • I applied through Eco grants in september. Someone came out within days to complete the application and check my benefits/earnings/boiler etc. They said I qualified and would have the new boiler within 10 days. Then I heard nothing for weeks. On chasing it up they said on checking the serial number my boiler contained asbestos. My landlady agreed to meet the additional cost of removal. Then someone came to do an energy survey, which took less than 5 minutes. Again I heard nothing for weeks. I phoned them up and was told the % increase in efficiency a new boiler would provide was not enough to qualify for the grant. Not sure if this is correct or not - my boiler is nearly 30 years old, although my house is very small and I only have 3 radiators.

Do you think its worth me trying anywhere else?
    Thanks.
  • It seems to me that companies are trying their upmost to come up with ideas why people are not entitled!!Personally,id try all the energy companies and see your MP as a last resort. After all it is the governments idea.
