so just take you headphones off/out.

And so disturb others with the music. I do sometimes just turn it off but not always.

Maybe don't listen to your music so loud?

With my music on but my headphones off I can slightly hear it but its no where near loud enough to disturb others.

I'm with the cashier all the way on this one....it is incredibly rude to natter on your phone and not even acknowledge the person serving you, whilst in a shop. No-one is saying that customers should have to engage in a full-blown conversation with shop staff every time they spend money in a supermarket, but basic manners should be expected from all customers.

I don't know where this mindless obsession with being constantly in conversation with someone on the end of a phone has come from. I used to get a bus to work and one of my fellow travellers used to get on with her small daughter, who was around 2-3 years old. The woman would completely ignore her child throughout the whole journey, just so that she could chat to her friends on her phone, a conversation which was shared with the whole bus, such was the volume of her voice. You see young women pushing prams with one hand and their phones in the other, can't they wait until they get home?

I work in an ante-natal clinic and unbelieveably, we have women who will chat on their phone DURING their appointment. Can you imagine the complaints if the midwives spent half of the appointment chatting on the phone to their friends?

My local newsagent (one of a national chain) actually has a sign above the till which states "If you are on your mobile phone, we will not be able to serve you"

    Good on them too!
"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"

Personally I don't see an issue with being on the phone whilst packing shopping at the checkout - here's the caveat though, as long as you acknowledge the cashier is there and are able to respond to any of their standard questions (help with packing, cash back etc). As long as you're still able to communicate in some way with the cashier, wheres the problem? Its not mandatory to make small talk with the cashier whilst they scan. Is it rude if I'm not on the phone but simply don't want to talk to the cashier? Is it rude if the cashier is not the friendly type and doesn't want to chat to me whilst they scan? I think not.

Its a business transaction, social interaction need only be bare minimum for the entire procedure to function well enough and its entirely possible to manage that whilst on the phone to someone else.

Then I think you are an incredibly rude person. It's called manners.

When you consider there were no policy to not serve a customer who are using a phone, I think it is the cashier who are the one being unreasonable and rude.

This was a pointless confrontation that should never have happened.

I think they were both rude. I understand WHY the cashier would have felt annoyed, but she should have been professional and got on with her job. She deserved a talking to from her boss for that. (no more than that though).

Customer was clearly very rude though.

I have never refused service though on occasion when I can hear the music from their headphones I'll talk a little quieter so they have to take them off to hear me.
I used to do that in a previous role... I was running an information desk and it amazed me the number of people who would amble up and start asking questions with earphones still in. Some would take just one out. I don't doubt that I'm not as exciting to listen to as Jay-Z but he wasn't telling them how to get a job was he.
I need to think of something new here...

My Mother works on a checkout and had a customer who decided to call someone just as her stuff was starting to be scanned, all questions were ignored and on the third time my Mother asked her to pay as there was a queue of customers waiting she gave my Mother a filthy look and told her to sshhh  really what call in a supermarket is so important it couldn't have waited.

I deliver washing machines for my work.
A couple of months back a woman would not stop talking on her phone while we were delivering.
She pointed to the kitchen while still jabbering on to her friend on the phone.
So we dumped it in the hall way and then left
    Owing on CC £00.00 :j
