As somebody who used to work in Sainsbug's, it's a PITA to serve someone who's on the phone. We had to ask "do you need any bags?" "Would you like help with your packing?" "Do you have a nectar card?" Etc.
Whilst having a gossipy conversation isn't part of the service, certain conversation is needed, and it's incredibly rude to prevent someone from doing their job properly by being an ignorant so & so.

How often do we hear people complaining about sales assistants being busy chatting to other members of staff and how rude that is!
Can you imagine how annoyed people would be if the sales assistant was gossiping on the phone whilst they scanned the items?

When i used to work at Tescos, there was an incident where a cashier was trying to serve someone on the phone, gave up and waited for them to finish and started talking to someone else while the wait. The customer on the phone then started having a go at the cashier for being rude talking to someone else while serving her

I used to work in Boots, and when customers came to my till whilst having a conversation on the phone (without acknowledging me), I'd ask if they wanted a bag. When they ignored me, I piled up their shopping and told them the total, and they were often annoyed and said 'can you put it in a bag?'

I always just smiled and said that I did actually ask them and they ignored me :)

I think that this is rude . If your phone rings , let it go to voicemail and ring back . However I have been guilty of listening to music on my iPod . Sometimes it is just that my hands aren't free to switch it off at the same time as getting money out of my bag but I do feel slightly guilty !

And now there's another one. Big deal.

    Calm down.

I'll be honest here, I'll use it whilst waiting in line, but as soon as the time comes to be served, I'll ask if I can call someone back and hang the phone up.

Last time I was in Sainsburys the checkout staff were having a conversation among themselves. Maybe next time I should insist they stop talking first.

At the checkout I have presented my shopping to the cashier to scan. My input is to bag, and, at the end of the process, to pay. I could manage those quite happily while talking on a phone.

Maybe they only started talking when they realised it was you. As for your "input" I would suggest that good manners extend on both sides starting with you.

Indeed. That's exactly how it came across as well.

Not at all like you were being needlessly petty...

Maybe next time just wait until you get home.

    It's not that urgent.

    You should calm down. ;)
