That's rubbish. I live in Kenya. How do you think I get my anti-malarials?

Actually it's far from rubbish, this link explains why you shouldn't be able to buy it in countries where Malaria is rife....

I can't talk for Kenya, so I won't. However, you can buy it in Thailand from some pharmacies. It's normally resold from travellers own supplies, or illegally imported or fake. So you are taking a risk. There is a big problem with fake malaria pills in Asia.

However, in my experience UK doctors and nurses sway to being overly cautious, and i've met many people taking powerful anti-malarias in areas with no risk because their doctors overgeneralised about the risk.

Malarone is not the only anti-malarial made.

No, but since the OP was referring to Malarone, and Malarone is what I get - in Kenya - that's what I was referring to.

So they should ,malaria related illnesses are reported as the worlds biggest killer.
The perfect example if you need one is the digging of the Panama canal by the French they lost tens of thousands of workers to malaria and other water bourne related illness.
The Americans took over the project some years later and they nearly eridicated the malaria threat (by treating the stagnant and standing water sources),and reduced the death rate of their workers.
If us Europeans don't start taking it seriously and with warmer climes in the south east we may be taking anti malaria tabs on our morning commute in ten years.

I take your point, but you're missing mine.

i.e. I met several couples in Bali last year that were prescribed horrific anti-malarials, which have side effects that can ruin your holiday (and made several of them feel terrible) on the basis that 'Indonesia' has malaria.

Same with an American couple who were in Koh Samui and going no-where else in Thailand. Unneccesary

Hey peeps - apologies but a few post have been removed:
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this: Sorry, giving or asking for medical advice is not permitted on this forum as it’s not what this site is about. While discussing medical insurance policies, cheaper ways to see consultants, cashback for alternative health treatments and how to get specific medication cheaper (legally) are all perfectly acceptable we ask you specifically not to discuss what to do in the event of certain medical problems (please see this rule on the Health Board). If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Having seen the effects of Malaria in both Africa and Asia - DON'T RISK TRAVELLING WITHOUT PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE. Believe me... Just don't! Not for the sake of a few quid (even £1/200)... IT ONLY TAKES ONE INFECTED MOSSIE!!!

And make sure you are taking the RIGHT stuff - on the proper advice of a doctor. DON'T RISK YOUR LIFE ON INTERNET MEDICAL ADVICE. There are a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings stated as fact on the internet! (I am surprised no-one has yet said 'You only need a couple gin & tonics each night and the quinine will take care of you!).

Some anti-malaria drugs are no longer effective in certain parts of the world.... And SOME (although not all) of the 'proper' stuff sold in certain countries IS fake...

GET PROPER MEDICAL ADVICE. GET A PRESCRIPTION (if necessary). PART WITH SOME CASH. AND GET PROTECTED!
