Anti-Malaria tablets - Malarone

Options
I need to get some Malarone anti-malaria tablets. The best price I've found so far is £1.99 each. Does anyone know of a better price for these?

If these are from strafford you may be better going through travelpharm as they are slightly more but no p and p. If you are getting from somewhere else then let me know as £1.99 with no p and p would be the cheapest I've seen and I'm in the same boat. Where you off?
And if, you know, your history...

Yes, from Stratford. I just noticed the £1.99 p&p charge.

    I'm off to Kenya.
  • I needed 21 tablets, the best price I found online was £2.10 each (£44.10) with free postage.
However, I got them from my local Asda Pharmacy for £2.29 each (£48.13) because it was more convenient and no waiting around, I didn't mind paying the extra £4

how soon before travel do you have to start taking them? And is your first destination in a malaria zone? Just wondering whether it might be cheaper (though probably not easier) to buy them once you get to Kenya. I have friends who have done this in Thailand and saved a packet - but then Bangkok where they started their trip isn't in a malaria zone and also there is a Boots branch there so you know you are getting the real thing!

You cannot buy malarone in Thailand, nor in Kenya, nor in any country that suffers from malaria. It is a product specifically for visitors from rich countries.

Actually that's not true. You can buy them from Boots (yes Boots!) in Bangkok for a fifth the price they cost here. I know that, because I stock up with them when I'm there!

That is very interesting, and rather surprising. Is it possible that what you buy there is Malarine rather than Malarone (a completely different drug)?

It is two years since I last researched this issue, but at that time I am confident that Malarone was not available in Asia. (I even telephoned the main Pharmacy shops in Hong Kong because I wanted to buy some malarone during my transit before going to Vietnam.)

malarone will probably be expensive wherever you go tbh - it's such a new drug that the patent will still be in place and so cheap generics won't be made yet. (it was developed for military use so that soldiers would be covered even when it was a trip with only a day's notice!)
