Liquids and gels in hand luggage

I am sure you seasoned travellers out there will already know, but for the less widely travelled, I thought I would just mention my first experience of the plastic bag for liquids and gels in hand luggage at Gatwick during last week. Firstly I was really surprised at how small the bag was, approx 10" square, and how little it held! If only I had realised, I would have packed ALL my liquids in my suitcase. I had to sort through my make up bag and put foundation, moisuriser, hair gel etc into the plastic bag. Anything that wouldnt fit in had to be thrown away. And any bottle over 100ml had to be thrown away too. I fully agree with the security, so I am not complaining, its just that I hadnt managed to find out the finer details in advance, and consequently had to dispose of some items. (not good for us money savers!)

Yes Liz, quite true. I flew into Gatwick this morning from Lanzarote. All our bathroom things went into to suitcases, even my lip balm that I usually keep in my handbag. All our bottled water we dumped in the bin before pastport control and bought again in duty free. (what fun & games)
Just wanted to add ... we won some bottles of wine (3) in quiz nights and thought we would bring it back as we are not hugh drinkers - Wrong, it was taken off us at Lanzarote airport and smashed in the waste bin as we went through. If we had known this - leaving it to the cleaners would have been better!

We flew out from Stansted and complied with the regs - tiny toiletries in the transparent bags etc.
On the way back we forgot about one or two items and left them accidentally in out hand luggage. Even though the bags were x-rayed, we weren't searched and got away with it.
Interesting that at both Stansted and Dublin you have to take your shoes off for x-ray.The man without a signature.0 -
We got caught by this as well .. we bought a couple of items labelled as travel size but did not check the volume (which happened to be 125ml .. so in the bin they went. The most annoying one was a brand new £50+ bottle of DWs perfume that they insisted on taking off me ... I don;t blame them, my own fault. I did see some people getting a bit irate though.

Sorry if this sounds ignorant !!, but do I read this right, you are not allowed to bring bottles of wine etc back ?, Last September, very soon after the last wave of threats, I was allowed to bring back wine and Ouzo from Greece with no problems at all, if this is the situation, I will take some rigid plastic bottles with me and bring the booze back in the case."Dogs come when they are called. Cats take a message and get back to you" :j :j0

Put the booze in the case, yes, but don't decant it into new bottles or you risk haveing your case opened and searched and possibly the stuff thrown away. Just wrap them well in a sealed ziplock/plastic bag and your clothes. As long as the bottles don't have room to move about and aren't touching other bottles they shouldn't break.Aiming to pay off mortgage by my 30th birthday... £39438 to go!

Yes Daz. No bottles of wine
We were told on a coach trip at a wine tasting (by a rep) that each person was aloud 3 bottles of wine to bring back, Soooooo thought the 3 bottles we had would be OK. BUT... as the hand luggage went through the ex-ray it was spotted. In the bin it went! I think you will be able to buy wine and spirits in duty free, after the check on the way back. OH bought a whisky, gin & brandy 1/2 bottles on the plane (return jurney) for father in law.
Oh to be wise  have a great holiday

Oh, a P.S. as we went through, they loudly shouted, watches, belts and empty pockets (put in plastic tray) and through ex-ray machine.
My portable DVD player had to be put in a plastic tray too.
My tickets, passports, I had in my hand - guess what? plastic tray too!

Bottles of liquid with more than 100ml can not be taken through airport security however once through you can stock up on duty free (the cynic in me says there is a certain conflict of interest going on here)
