Choosing the right hoover?

I'm looking for a new vacuum cleaner, but not sure what to look out for on the specification? I see there is "Watts" & "Air Watts". Is this all I need to be looking out for? I take it, the higher the Watts the better? Which "Watts" is more important?

And another question: I've been using it a fair bit lately, and I sometimes find that when I run it forwards and back, it picks up on the forwards and then deposits a load on the back. So I have to go over it a few times before it's all picked up again.

Does that indicate that I should empty it? Or clear the brush bar? It's not full yet but I haven't inspected the bar ...
