I'm looking for a new vacuum cleaner, but not sure what to look out for on the specification?

I see there is "Watts" & "Air Watts". Is this all I need to be looking out for? I take it, the higher the Watts the better?

    Which "Watts" is more important?

    The air watts, probably.

I have a 1300 watt Goblin Aquavac that I use for clearing up after DIY jobs. I'm convinced that 1000 of those watts are pure noise.

I hated my Dyson. Love my Miele though. Have converted my Mum, brother and aunt to Miele too. Would never go back to bagless.

Only thing to add is if you get a Miele cylinder I would make sure I had a turbobrush. I bought mine separately and it cost about £40. Everyone else bought a cat and dog version which comes with the turbobrush. None of us have pets but I sometimes think my daughter and myself moult as much as any cat or dog!

Also, my son has excema and it is so much better at not producing dust when using it or emptying it. The bag is completely sealed. I bought the super air clean filter version.

Can anyone explain what the "Watts" and "Air Watts" are please?

Argos have some great deals on at the moment if anyones looking for a hoover themselves. Half price on most items.

I get on really well with my Sebo (upright pet version) having ditched the dyson which was rubbish at cornering and too heavy. Sebos are said to be good if you have allergies and I do notice the difference.

We have a Dyson at home which is a good ten years old and I've had to replace the hose which was an easy clip out thing to do.

I have a vax at work which I hate with a passion because I have to clean out the filter every week and it's a really messy job. I also have a Henry at work, which I prefer (but the boss bought the vax to replace it).

I think if I bought a new hoover for home it would probably be a Dyson, but they seem soooo expensive these days.

I have an Oreck XL, in the past I have had vacs and dysons both of which turned out to be rubbish and didn't last very long, my vac needed constant filter cleans and the whole machine would be constantly clogged and at that time there were no pets in the house or anything. All of my dysons developed electrical faults (wires were never hoovered over) and had quite poor suction.

I have had my oreck quite a while, it must be about eight years and it is doing very well, suction hasn't decreased and I haven't had to replace anything.

I've got a cylinder dyson and its the best hoover ever and I have gone through quite a few!! I wasted so much money on cheap hoovers and decided to splash out on a decent one and am so glad I did:D

I have two, I have a normal upright dyson which is great! but it's quite heavy for me, so I got for my Birthday this year a cordless dyson which is not cheap, but within two uses I was in love with it. I hate vacuuming because it's such a performance with a wired machine.

The cordless only lasts around ~20 mins before it needs a long recharge, but once a week/fortnight with a big vacuum and then daily with the wireless and I'm very happy, with a very furry cat I was quite shocked at how much it does all pick up that I didn't notice :D The full charge on the wireless is easily enough to do a full flat vacuum for me daily.

We had a Dyson for a number of years and I was really unimpressed with it.
We now have a Miele which seems to be far more powerful. The only downside is it needs a bag.
